2002, 2003 and 2005
My favorite was the 2002 - though it was lighter in body
Aroma: Chocolaty and malty. For such a big beer I dont pick up alochol in the aroma
Appearance: Nice amber
Flavor: Wonderful malt with great balance of hop bitterness.
Palate: Medium bodied unlike a lot of malty barley wines... long somewhat dry finish
Overall: An excellent beer regardless of the vintage... it is wonderful to see the differences for the years. A treasure worth seeking out... as with every beer I try at the Magnolia I come away with affirmation that Dave Maclean makes absolutely incredible English Style Beers bar none... a brewer and brew pub a must visit in SF mrnutsnbolts (204), Berkeley, California, USA

So young but yet so mature. just amazing malt complexity and nice hop balance. simply a joy to behold and ready for the world at such a young age, a testament to great parenting. cquiroga (370), Sylmar, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 1, 2005 2/19/05. On tap at Toronado Barleywine Festival ’04 in San Francisco, CA 2/19/05. Rick cakey raisin and peat nose, almost like a baltic porter with no roast. Chocolate nougat and some nutty hot alcohol hum. Dry and dark finish with a touch of burnt ash in the background. Big round body, super thick with a long dry finish. Some raw wood in there, and toasted malt. Good biscuity toasted flavors poking around in and out of the harsher elements. Very assertive and distinct. I dug it. Odeed (1677), Bakersfield, California, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 5, 2004 very astringent alcohol flavor that seemed to become medicinal the warmer it got, very bitter and seemed to need alot of time to age to mellow out this factor, very young and immature to say the least about a barleywine, very bitter sweet grant (792), Long Beach, CA/Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 1, 2004 Fatty, crisco-y aroma, including some chocolate chips. Also some hints of beef. Tropical fruit, especially pineapple comes through as well. Flavor includes lots of sweet, smarmy, gelatinous malts. It was OK, just a little rude.
