Commercial Description:

Our tribute to the most famous tenant of our historic building is brewed in September for a February 1st release (kicking off our annual Strong Beer Month). A little hoppy to truly be an English-style barleywine, Old Thunderpussy nevertheless uses all English ingredients and is built around a big, bold Maris Otter taste accented by East Kent Goldings hops. A slightly warmer fementation coaxes out an additional dimension of fruitiness.

Malts: Maris Otter; crystal, Munich, brown
Hops: Challenger; East Kent Goldings
Food Pairings: strong cheeses including Stilton and other blues, intense cheddars, aged goat cheeses

Another excellent offering from Magnolia. The best barley wine I've ever had, hands down. For '04 it is 10.7% (and feels even stronger).

2005 edition is the best ever for this marvelous brew. So young but yet so mature. just amazing malt complexity and nice hop balance. simply a joy to behold and ready for the world at such a young age, a testament to great parenting.

Tried 3 vintages of this as part of the strong beer tasting month 2002, 2003 and 2005 My favorite was the 2002 - though it was lighter in body Aroma: Chocolaty and malty. For such a big beer I dont pick up alochol in the aroma Appearance: Nice amber Flavor: Wonderful malt with great balance of hop bitterness. Palate: Medium bodied unlike a lot of malty barley wines... long somewhat dry finish Overall: An excellent beer regardless of the vintage... it is wonderful to see the differences for the years. A treasure worth seeking out... as with every beer I try at the Magnolia I come away with affirmation that Dave Maclean makes absolutely incredible English Style Beers bar none... a brewer and brew pub a must visit in SF

Wooohoo. Great to try a beer with this name (and it’s over 10% too!). Tried on tap at Magnolia pub during strong ale month. Great pub/restaurant. Creamy microbubble head. Deep red color. Sweet. Alcohol well hidden. Delicious.

On tap @ Magnolia: A nice surprise, this one was. Beautiful amber color, totally fruity nose. The flavor was both fruity and warming. There were some nice hops present as well. My favorite beer at Magnolia thus far.

4oz sample in a full size tulip at brewery - Aroma of prunes, plums, raisin, alcohol and earty hops. Pours deep mahogony with a small head and good lacing. Flavor matches aroma with strong alcohol and a deep fruitiness. The hops shine a little too brightly for my tastes. Palate is tart and sticky. A really nice barleywine I’d love to have with a little age on it. Very tasty none the less.
