Commercial Description:
A dry, refreshing IPA with agressive hop character. This beer is certainly a cousin of Prescription Pale but is straw-colored, lighter bodied, and has a decidedly English hop bill. Challenger, Northdown, Fuggles and Goldings are all used although a noticable addition of Cascades keeps this ale anchored in the U.S. style. With five hop varieties and five additions this IPA has the most complex hop character of any of our beers. Pale malt comprises most of the grist but some light crystal malt and a bit of malted wheat (for taste, body and head retention) round out this beer nicely. 60BUs

(06.21.07) On tap at Magnolia Pub and Brewery, San Francisco, CA. 6.3% ABV. Clear golden amber ale with a small white head. Good carbonation. Very faint malt aroma. Starts dry with light toasted nutty malt flavor. Medium bodied. Short to medium length finish with light hop bitterness. Very good drinkable bitter beer. Goes well with a Cuban sandwich.

Had both cask and draught at brewpub. Cask was a bit better with mellow flavors. Draught a bit more bitter and more hop aroma.

(10/30/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in San Francisco. 6.1%. Deep golden color. Aroma has some slightly floral hops and some vegetal yeastiness. Sweetish flavor with some malt, vegetables and some strange bitter hops afterward. Also some sour buttery notes. Medium-bodied.

Fruity, light hoppy. Could use more complexcity and more bitterness.

I had just arrived at the pub after a long drive (in traffic). I was ready to quench my thirst with a nice juicy, bitter, IPA. I ordered the spud boy and the lady ordered the proving ground. Spud boy was pretty disappointing. Had some hoppy aroma, mostly earthy. Lots of malt. Flavor was not really dry not really sweet, just middle of the road. Body was fairly thin. Bitterness was minimal. This is REALLY an IPA? I’m left very disappointed (especially after sampling PROVING GROUND).

On tap at the Magnolia Pub. It pours gold with bright white head and decent lacing. The aroma swings more malty with roasted malts mixed with bread and toffee. The flavor starts with both hop bitterness from pine hops and a bit of floral hops as well as roasted malts, bread and faint butter and toffee.

Sampled at Magnolia, June 2007. Clear copper with a white head. Caramel, herbal earthy hops in the nose. Full, malty caramel backbone with plenty of earthy resinous hop bitterness and a hint of noble grassiness. Medium bull body with medium, fine-beaded carbonation. Solid British IPA.
