Commercial Description:
Mahr’s Brau Ungespundet Hefetrub It pours with a big, creamy, long-lasting, head; has a golden-bronze color; a wonderfully fresh, perfumy; hop aroma; a remarkably smooth, almost oily, malty, palate; very fresh flavours; and a spritzy finish. It is beautifully balanced, but leans to the dry side. This is a delicious, appetising beer and a true taste of Germany’s fast-vanishing artisanal tradition.

Nose is bready, slightly grassy, some light lemon. Flavor is slight dough, wonderful malt. Perfectly balanced malt finish.

From the source in Bamberg. I sat underneath a billygoat’s head and enjoyed this fantastic beer in a ceramic stein. I remember this beer being bready and malty with very little hop character. It went extremley well with my nurenbergerwurst.

Bottle. Pours a nice hazy orange-copper body with a medium-sized whitish creamy head and plenty of small floating particles. The aroma is mainly malt-accented noting caramel, yeast, and oily dark bread properties. The flavour has an acidic fruitiness to it which I can’t say I care for too much. Weak hops up front but generally the hop presence is nearly non-existant. Overall it’s quite bland and uninteresting. I still continue to be intrigued by this style. Bought at Merchant’s Fine Wines in Dearborn, MI in April 2006.

Pours cloudy orange with off-white head that fades quickly. Aroma of citrus hops and grain. Flavor matches aroma - with a stronger citrus. Clean crisp slightly sour finish.

Bottle, provided by ClarkVV. Ok aroma, sweet. Toasted malt, a little fruit, honey, bready. Brownish gold color Big head good lacing. Bitterish flavor. Kind of metallic. otherwise like aroma. Lite body, smooth sort of creamy mouthfeel, dry finish. Eh, not a style I usually would have. Turned out this bottle is a year old so I don’t think i got it at it’s best.

Bottled in March 2005, drunk in March 2006. Bottle has been kept in beer cooler/refrigerator since importation.
The deep bronze-copper liquid is clear from having settled and rested cold for a year. Thick layer of dark brown sediment sits on the bottom, while an off-white head is formed, small and quickly dissipating to a ring, though there is fair, sticky lacing. The nose is redolent of light toasted grains, graham crackers, soft yeast and old, soily, plant-like hops. Just a near brush of hallertauers at this point. Some old fruit skins, mild vanilla, peaches and crusty bread. The flavor is lightly metallic (b-vitamins), doughy and soft, with a gentle effervescence. Lightly sticky, yet not overly sweet, malt notes combine with a touch of sourish-like munich grains and a rather dull yeastiness on the end. Hops have heavily faded, expectedly, over the year it has sat. The metal and soil notes really detract from the overall interplay of malt, yeast and hop, but I can certainly say that the beer should not be aged. I’m only entering a review so as to keep intact my "notes" from this bottle and be able to compare when I try a fresh sample. Actually, I did not even notice that the beer was a year old when purchasing it and am surprised Downtown Liquors would keep it on the shelf/cooler that long. The carbonation is getting tired, too much dough and bland yeast, with the metal and only soily plant-like hop notes at this point. But a very soft, almost oily texture, as the commercial description says. No alcohol noted.

Deep golden body, quite hazy, with a large, creamy white head, short-lived but decent in its lacing. This has a worty sweet aroma with a gentle floral hop scent. Very thick mouthfeel, yet surprisingly spritzy with carbonation. The malts taste like buttered freshy baked bread, hot from the oven. Nice lingering bitter finish. Good.
