Commercial Description:
Mahr’s Brau Ungespundet Hefetrub It pours with a big, creamy, long-lasting, head; has a golden-bronze color; a wonderfully fresh, perfumy; hop aroma; a remarkably smooth, almost oily, malty, palate; very fresh flavours; and a spritzy finish. It is beautifully balanced, but leans to the dry side. This is a delicious, appetising beer and a true taste of Germany’s fast-vanishing artisanal tradition.

Decent, but this is not my favorite German beer producer. Just kind of average with average flavors for this style. Some herbal yeastiness, with some buttery toasted malt flavors. Light to medium bodied on the palate and is very easy to drink, with some very subtle flavors.

1 pint, 0.9 ounce bottle. Pours light copper with a rocky white head, some head retention. Buttery light toasted malt (grass, hay, meal) aroma with sugar notes and trace yeast. Lightly sweet malt and yeast flavor, medium acidity, low bitterness. Very easy and smooth to drink. Medium bodied and creamy, slightly fizzy palate.

Deep gold, loads of hanging particles, decent initial head fades away completely. Pleasant bread aroma, like crust right out of the oven. Flavor is also bready, with a mild to moderate hop finish of grass, hay, light florals, and a touch of mint. Definitely yeasty, bread flavors dominate. A touch of honey and dust is noted as it warms. Very pleasant, I enjoy the rare samples I get of these artisinal lagers.

500ml bottle. The aroma was minimal a light sweet yeasty smell, barely distinguishable. There was virually no head and the body was a hazy orange. The initial flavor was slightly sweet with a short acidic finish. On the palate the body was light, the texture dry and the carbonation flat, the finish was on the middle of the tongue and a little metallic and astrigent. Bad bottle.

08.12.05 500ml bottle. Hazed, yellowish golden with small but lasting white head of tight foam. Aroma is grassy but also yeasty, like a sourdough, with a sourness to compliment the hay. Grainy flavors are bolstered by solid malt body unexpected in such a pale brew. Smooth body doesn’t seem to miss the lack of eff.

(Draught) Pours a hazy golden body with a small white head. Aroma of wheat and citrus. Flavor of sweet citrus, yeast, and herbs with a somewhat dry finish.

Slight lactic sourness apparent. Cloudy yellow dull-brown body. Malt a muddle of sweet fruit calrity, mild graininess, and harsh burnt caramel toast. Hops are herbal. Not really a good mix.

(On tap @ Restaurant Alt-Ringlein, Bamberg) It was served in a stein so I can’t say anything about the colour. The head disapeared pretty fast. Buttery, fruity aroma. Somewhat fruity flavour, ok bitterness.
