Commercial Description:
Mahr’s Brau Ungespundet Hefetrub It pours with a big, creamy, long-lasting, head; has a golden-bronze color; a wonderfully fresh, perfumy; hop aroma; a remarkably smooth, almost oily, malty, palate; very fresh flavours; and a spritzy finish. It is beautifully balanced, but leans to the dry side. This is a delicious, appetising beer and a true taste of Germany’s fast-vanishing artisanal tradition.

Bottle. Hazy golden with fine head and lace. Not much going on, almost watery mouthfeel, hoppy-bitter finish. Pleasent but unexciting.

Bottle. Grassy, haylike malt aroma - quite unusual. Clear yellow color. Sweet fresh malt flavor then buttery and slight sweetness. Moderate hops finish. An unusual Landbier.

.5 l bottle, dated 3 Feb., ’04, from Whole Foods, Chicago. Pours a nice yellowish head, like an whipped egg. Head sure sticks around and adds to a heady hop aroma. In fact, hops are the first thing I taste, almost roaming into american pale ale territory, rather than floweriness of a pilsener. Body is pale as any lager, but its malts have a nice toasty quality. Thought it was pretty clear for an unfiltered beer. Towards the end, though, the cheese and wet peanut shell smell of old lager yeast comes in. Well, the bottle was seven months old, probably past its shelf life, and they did seem to brew it to compensate for that possibility.

(Bottled, rated Sep 24, 2004) Hazy, pale golden color with small head. Sourish vegetable aroma. Slightly sour flavor with a hint of scotch ales. Medium-bodied, low-carbonated palate. (From a wooden cask, rated Sep 10, 2005, 5-3-5-3-10=2.6) Hazy golden color with small head. Slightly winous aroma of yeasty, vegetably malt with potatoes and sweetish alcohol hints. Sourish and moderately acidic flavor with a bit raw, wheaty malts. Medium-bodied, sourish and sticky palate with low carbonation. A quite unclean, average brew. Won’t change the score, as the cask hasn’t improved the regular bottled product.

Bottle. Poured a small sized off-white head and fine-small sized bubbles that fully dissipated. Uncarbonated, hazy and a butterscotch hue. Malty, hoppy and sweet aroma. Flavor was malty, hoppy and sour. Mouthfeel was fairly smooth and dry. Light bodied beer with sparse lacing. Not a beer that I will seek out again. Rather boring.

This bottled brew poured a medium sized head of mostly lasting white colored frothy fine to medium sized bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body was hazy with swirling mists of yeast floating in it like an angel over its protectorate and orange brown in color. The aroma was yeasty moldy and malty. The mouth feel was tingly and smooth with a lingering yeasty finish. The flavor contained notes of yeasty malts and strange hops.

Poured a slightly hazy orange/gold color with some sediment floating around. Moderate creamy head and scant lacing, with a nice malty and slightly citrus aroma. Medium bodied and flavorful with a dry maltiness and a good hoppy bitterness.
