Commercial Description:
Mahr’s Brau Ungespundet Hefetrub It pours with a big, creamy, long-lasting, head; has a golden-bronze color; a wonderfully fresh, perfumy; hop aroma; a remarkably smooth, almost oily, malty, palate; very fresh flavours; and a spritzy finish. It is beautifully balanced, but leans to the dry side. This is a delicious, appetising beer and a true taste of Germany’s fast-vanishing artisanal tradition.

500ml bottle. Bottled on 26 03 03, so this is just shy of 2 years old! Pours a nice golden color, with a good head and strongly carbonated. White lace clings to glass. Slightly cloudy from yeast. Smells good. Toasty malt and just a touch of apple fruitiness along with some pleasant hops. Palate is medium in feel, finishing dry and bitter with a little lingering malt behind that. I really like this beer, and I’m not generally a lager fan. It has a full maltiness with solid hoppiness. Just a joy to drink, this has got everything I could ask for from a session lager, nothiing dull at all. I am really surprised that it has held up this well. I didn’t expect it to. I had another older one a couple months ago and it was noticeably sour. This one isn’t at all. Very solid. Rating of 4.1. Having had this many more times in fresher bottles, and just having from the keg at the Huber Haus, I am forced to bump up my rating for this. This is one of my favorite beers. Lush, full, tasty, fabulous. A bit hazy, hoppy, with a wonderful malt component...the yeast really makes this beer special. An absolute joy. I need to have a keg of this in my house!

One of the best. No fancy words to describe it. I just think this is a super beer with a great taste from start to finish. One can read the other reviews for how it looks, etc.

Another update: Big rocky head, bubby cloudy body. Honey dominates the aroma. What is most striking about the beer is the riotous bitterness which cuts through the honey and caramel malt. The flavors are not well intergrated, but I gather that this is hardly the point. The beer succeeds on its rich malt and robust bitterness. The king of commercially available rustic lagers. Update: Time to take this one down a notch. Samples vary too widely to allow this to have a 4.5. Sometimes this beer can be as good as set forth below. Too often tastes like a souped-up Warsteiner. Still good, but no longer hall of fame material. Old: This beer is remarkable. The malt is as big as a Paulaner Oktoberfest, rich and meaty. It unfolds in about 4 separate events in the mouth and leaves with a whisper. Very complex. What amazed me is that after finishing it, I noticed that I had a terribly old sample (over a year past its 'best before' date). Perhaps the sediment gives it longer life. I would love to taste this fresh.
