On tap at the Great Lost Bear

Very dark brown with light brown, thick head. Milk chocolate aroma, nutty, hints of coffeee - typical porter aroma but good complexity. Palate is a let-down after such a fine introduction - oily, with lecithin chocolate flavours and dried fruit esters.

Any first impressions?
-Inordinately large foam bobs atop the browned black.
-The horror! Iodine-based shoe wax is not what I look for in my porter aromas.
-Roastiness battles the rising iodine, and its deep wounds are inappropriately covered in wet Band-Aids.
-The large, frothy bubbling and lean maltiness could have been passable, if not for the rampant technical problems.

What if you dig deeper?
-Roasty bitterness and wooden hops are mroe than bothered by the surging iodine.
-Yeast problem, you say? Ha!
-Alright, my gag reflex is about to take control, so I’m done here.
-Better luck next time; this shouldn’t be on the shelves.

Bottle; no date.

Bottled. Totally black; lovely head. Aroma rather weak, but coffee/chocolate notes present; little hops. Flavor smashing though, rich and creamy chocolate-espresso throughout; nice body; decent but short finish. A quality production on the whole from this as-yet-unknown new Bar Harbor brewer.

Poured black with a huge tan head. Very rasty aroma with notes of coffee. The flavor was roasty and sweet with coffee and a light tartness. Some earthy notes and even some plastic.

Growler. Sour milk and cola aroma. Dark opaque brown with small head. Sour/green banana or orange peel flavor - very astringent with only a light hint of malt to finish. Think something was wrong with this one - little porter character in the flavor. Will have to try again someday.

Clear dark brown color with a thick frothy light brown head. Unpleasant sour aroma. Roasty flavor with unpleasant sourness.

The beer pours from the bottle a beauteous dark walnut color, the head is portly in size, spumous in texture, and the color a light tan and the lace formed is a satiny sheet to hide the glass. Aromas of toasted grain predominate in the nose, sweet and fresh, quite a treat to the olfactory and ocular senses. Start is malt laden, sweet and the top moderate in feel to the palate. Finish has a mild to moderate acidity, the hops pleasant in their spiciness, very dry and long lasting somewhat tart aftertaste. A fine drinking porter and another treasure from the state of Maine.
