| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 27, 2008 The pour reveals a dark brown color with reddish highlights and a medium tan head. In the nose, the yeast provide a smell of bubble-gum, there’s also burnt caramel, malt and fruits. The flavor also has a bubble-gum feel to it with malt sturdy enough to do an adequate job of camouflaging a good part of the alcohol, there’s also burnt caramel and fruits. The body is medium with a liquorous texture and soft carbonation. This is an enjoyable, potent beer. FishManLA (301), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 22, 2008 Pours dark brown with a foamy tan head that dissipates slowly. Nose of nuts, malt and raisins. Taste of raisins, red grapes, nut, spice, and of course, alcohol. Alcohol is potent on the finish as well. This, like some other very strong dark ales is a bit like drinking carbonated cognac. Interesting. Not a bad aperitif beer. ScoWRee (277), Phila, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 16, 2008 This beer pours a deep dark brown with a medium tan head. The aromas are very weak but I get nuts plums and flowers. The flavor is liquorice, dates and a little bit of pepper. This one fell short. Cheers! Rune (2863), Tromsø, Norway
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jun 10, 2008 250ml bottle perfect accompaniment to wild boar at Den Tatoverede Enke in Copenhagen. Mahogany body with a ruby tint. Beige foamy head. Rich spicy aroma where dried fruits play a part. Powerful flavour of dark berries, coffee malts and spicy hops. Moderate sweetness. Finish off with yeast and warming alcohol. Plenty of body. Great stuff (30.05.2008). Crosling (1856), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 7, 2008 Dark brown/burgundy pour. Full, creamy foam. Nose could be better but it has some dark fruit, hops and yeast. Flavor is awfully complex, nicely malty with lots of Belgian character. Brown sugar, caramel, toffee along with hints of dark fruits. Well balanced . It’s a really nice ale. SpudClampDawg (1027), Jasper, Indiana, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 6, 2008 750ml bottle: Deep brown pour with a rich mocha head that lasts. The aroma is inviting with lots of earthy malt, dark chocolate, plum, dry cocoa and a healthy dose of ethery alcohol. Chewy mouthfeel. The carbonation expounds on the tongue and cheeks with each swallow. More big malts leads the way with heavy hints of baker’s chocolate, burnt caramel, sweet dough. The yeast throws plenty of esthers - from plum to banana to cherry. Very complex, but ultimately a bit too sweet for my tastes. Finishes with a splash of alcohol and a mighty dose of white sugar.

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 4, 2008 Poured into a Westy goblet. One finger of light tan head recedes pretty quickly with no lacing. Not really what you’d expect from a well-regarded Belgian ale.
Nice quad aroma of chocolate, banana, toffee, and darker fruits like plum and raisin.
Flavor is mainly a complex maltiness with touches of fruit and a lingering caramel finish. Some spiciness, probably anise also comes out mid-palate to take the edge off the sweetness.
Mouthfeel is a little thin and a little too carbonated for my taste. It’s not awful or excessive but it could stand to be fuller. Luckily despite this, the mighty 12% alcohol is not detectable in the flavor. It does however warm the insides. Fairly drinkable for a monstrous beer.
