Nov 19, 2004 The first thing that struck me with this surprise purchase is how incredibly smooth it is -- in what other Belgian do you find 12 ABV cloaked this elegantly? Dark, secretive, mesmerizingly fragrant and moreish: A perennial favorite.

Feb 10, 2007 Updated: Oct 12, 200825 cL bottle. Pours deep brown/black with light brown head. Aroma is fruity (plum and raisins), hops, coffee and malt. Taste has the same in a wineous blend - and what a perfect blend! Fruit, coffee and wineous are the keynotes that I would put to this beer. I have a new favourite!

Dec 3, 2009 Bottle conditioned, very dark with a good head, sweet malt aroma, very sweet malt, fruit and toffee taste, the high alcohol is not apparent at first but lingers after you swallow.

Sep 15, 2006 Bottle at Frigo in Shinjuku, Tokyo. This one was a total surprise to me... I went for this one on the recommendation of RateBeer user TimE. Poured a dark reddish-brown color, with a decent amount of foamy head that faded into a thin layer of microscopic bubbles. The aroma was fairly light (definitely decieving)...some sweetness, malts, dried fruits were detectable. Huge, rich flavors of dark dried fruits (cherries, dates, figs, raisins), sweet malts, dark candy sugar, yeast. Very dense and rich, but soft and velvety mouthfeel. Amazing. I had never heard of this before. I think that as more people rate this beer, it will prove itself as a true heavyweight of the style.

Jul 1, 2009 Overall one of the best strong beers I have ever had. It has a very balanced flavor with a slightly sweet finish. It packs a punch on the ABV scale but the taste does not come across as such.

Jul 3, 2004 Very dark red/brown with a large brown head. Sweet, fruity nose with grapes, some bready malt, and yeast. Sweet flavor with grapes, chocolate, and a nice touch of bitterness at the end.

May 16, 2004 Updated: Apr 9, 2006I love Belgian ales, and this brewery knows how to do it right. I absolutely love this ale and their Brut Reserve. The color is a deep coffee brown. The aroma is hoppy, malty, and spicy all in one. I love this beer in a big snifter. The taste hits you with sweetness, but there’s no getting past that 12% ABV edge. Yum. The Malheur ale’s just have a very unique flavor, from start to finish. I’m guessing it’s the combo of their own yeast plus real hop flowers rather than pellets. Flat out a very fine ale. One of my favorites.
