FishManLA (181), Abita Springs, Louisiana, USA Jun 22, 2008 Pours dark brown with a foamy tan head that dissipates slowly. Nose of nuts, malt and raisins. Taste of raisins, red grapes, nut, spice, and of course, alcohol. Alcohol is potent on the finish as well. This, like some other very strong dark ales is a bit like drinking carbonated cognac. Interesting. Not a bad aperitif beer.
Magjayran (1152), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 5, 2008 Dark brownish red color with a thick tan head. Some prune and dates in the aroma. Very sweet tasting with dark fruit and caramel dominating. Seems to be a little thin for such a strong beer. Borresteijn (582), Amstelveen, Netherlands Sep 28, 2008 On tap @ KBF in Geel. Hazy dark brown beer, beige head. Aroma of caramel, yeast, a bit soapy floral notes. Flavour is caramel, dark fruits, malty sweet, bitter finish. Mouthfeel is full, creamy and soft. ABV very well hidden. Excellent stuff. davidpl (403), Santiago, Chile Sep 26, 2008 Appearance: dark mahogany color. Big head, beige, some rocky and lasting.
Aroma: yeast and vanilla with cookies reminiscences. Intensive ripe fruits smells like figs, plums and berries in liquor. Notes of caramel, butter, chocolate, rum, coconut, ice cream, clove and nougat.
Flavor: caramel and toasted malts, sweet start. Several hints and reminiscences like caramel, butterscotch, toffee, vanilla, clove, bitter chocolate, truffles, grain coffee, figs, raisins in rum, hazelnuts toasted, plums, "Irish coffee", mocha, blueberries, calafate, etc. Light bitterness, lasting and multidimensional from the toast, the alcoholic degree and the hops, maybe some resinous and with slight medicinal herbal touches. Liquory similar to Fernet. Floral aftertaste, similar to chamomile.
Palate: full body, semi-creamy and oily texture. Low to medium carbonation.
Remark: Wonderful and complex beer; a symphony of aromas, flavors and textures. bb (2131), Martinez, California, USA Sep 23, 2008 Bottle. Dark mahogony beer with an off-white head. Rich caramel, malt, dried fruit aroma with fig/raisin and light chocolate notes. Sweet caramel malt flavor with raisins and yeast. Medium bodied. Lingering sweet malt, raisins, figs and light yeast. Aging should do wonders. fidel (202), Livermore, California, USA Sep 19, 2008 Hazy, dark amber, sweet, brown sugar, caramel, malty, dark fruits, little dark chocolate, little yeast, little nutty.
