JoeMcPhee (3615), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Jul 5, 2008 Deep amber-brown beer, tending to black with some ruby highlights. Aroma is quite rich and malty with a heavy plummy/pruny sweetness. Some lightly fruity vineousness. Light strawberry and molasses. Flavour is quite nice, light cocoa, herbal chocolate and a soft grassy hoppiness. Lightly vineous but well-attenuated. As it warms it gets a bit chewier. Lightly earthy with a bit of leathery character. Lingering peppery spiciness. It’s pretty decent really. redlight (1026), Winter Park, Florida, USA May 23, 2008 sampled at the abbey’s 2 yr anniversary party in Deland, Fl. Fruity aromas, with caramel and sweet malts. Pours cloudy red. Dark fruits, berries, strawberries, over ripe fruits hints of bananas, with a spicy finish. Not bad, pretty interesting. BDR (1846), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Apr 18, 2008 Brown color with a thick head. A sweet spicy aroma with dominant pineapple. The flavor, dear god the flavor. I was wondering what badgerben was babbling about given the decent aroma. Then I taste the thing. Horrid stale carddboard, spoiled spices, and generally rancid body. hopscotch (4358), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Apr 12, 2008 Bottle... Very hazy, dark red ale with little to no head. The aroma is restrained and grainy, but also malty, fruity and vinous. Full-bodied with crisp carbonation. Sweet, but tangy. Fruity, but hearty and rich with chewy malts and dark fruits. Sweet, dark fruit finish. After one week of drinking and thinking about rare Italian beers, I’ve discovered that, like Americans, Italian brewers are all over the place nowadays. However, Italians have not yet discovered the wonder of heavily hopped beers... and, for the most part, neither have I.
