Pours a deep, clear copper with a big creamy tan head that regenerates nicely with every swirl, leaving decent lacing and boozy legs along the side.
The aroma is very good and very sweet with the caramel malts dominating throughout. There is more than a hint of chocolate and sweet dark fruits come out more as it warms.
The taste is good as well, but it seems a little bit off. The backbone of sweet sugary malts are there as well as the dark fruits, but there is also a faint tartness that is starting to show and I imagine this bottle has seen better days.
The mouthfeel is slick and medium bodied with soft carbonation and slightly tart in the finish, probably not intended unfortunately.
The nose on this one is great but there is definitely an emerging sourness that suggests infection. It’s a shame, as I bet this was an excellent dopplebock fresh. brewolf (51), Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 4, 2009 Had this after a dome-hike north of the Yosemite valley. I was surprised to read the so-so reviews of this delectable brew. Aroma was strong malt, caramel, and roasted hazelnuts. Nice pour with a small head and gentle lacing above the bark-brown body. Tasted like dark heaven with all the elements of the nose unveiled. Smooth as silk with the alcohol masked wonderfully. Don’t pass this one up. Take a good hike through the mountains and come back to enjoy this wonderfully rich brew. Easily in my top three for doppelbocks. marcus (1878), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 2, 2009 This dark copper beer poured with a generous beige head and a chocolate aroma. The flavor is coffee and chocolate with a toffee finish. It’s sweeter than most doppelbocks I have tried, but is still pretty tasty. JohnC (2279), Mission Viejo, California, USA
