Commercial Description:
Available filtered and pasteurised in bottles and cans.
Contract brewed by Burtonwood for Ushers (Refresh UK).
By the turn of the 20th century Mild was very popular and bottled ales were growing fast. In 1902, Manns Whitechapel brewery produced the first bottled mild and brown ale was born.
Since the Fifties mass market brands of bitter and lager have grown strongly, at the expense of brown. With brown ale volumes in decline, most brewers withdrew their brands, Manns being a notable exception.

Has a great look to it, nice dark brown colour, some faint smells of hops and barley in the scent. Tastes kind of funky, perhaps this taste isn’t for me - seems simple, very bready, quite watery, not what I wanted or expected. Maybe for a low-alc it could be a contender for a decent dark beer, though.

500ml bottle shared with CinnamonGirl. Clear rosewood body, only a ring of brownish bubbles at the surface. Sweet smell of malts and wort. Sweet roasted malts in flavour and little else. Creamy in the mouth. Lightweight, but drinkable as breakfast ale (hotel room, Preston 03.05.2009).

Bottle from a Manchester supermarket. I can see why this type of beer has died out. Sweet malt, lots of sugary flavour, a little burned caramel gives a hint of bitterness, but this is too sickly..

Deep, dark brown with ruby tints where the light forces its way through. Musty beige foams sits sparsely atop it. Heavily malted aromas much like a good sour-dough or rye. Slightly farmy with some dark pruney fruit. Rich yet not too thick and very fruity. Sweet aftertaste. Quite an interesting and easily drinkable ale. A little watery but rather smooth all round. Interesting though not what I look for especially. Easy to drink and with good fruity notes. Roasty and red-faced.

Deep, dark brown colour. Roasted malt aroma. Rather sweet, malty flavour. Quite full flavoured for a low alcohol beer but overall a tad too sweet.
