Commercial Description:
Available filtered and pasteurised in bottles and cans.
Contract brewed by Burtonwood for Ushers (Refresh UK).
By the turn of the 20th century Mild was very popular and bottled ales were growing fast. In 1902, Manns Whitechapel brewery produced the first bottled mild and brown ale was born.
Since the Fifties mass market brands of bitter and lager have grown strongly, at the expense of brown. With brown ale volumes in decline, most brewers withdrew their brands, Manns being a notable exception.

Bottle. Medium brown with minimal head. Aroma was mildly of caramel. This was a bit watery in the mouth, which is unsurprising given the ABV. The flavour was of sweet malt with a touch of hops. Ok.

Bubbly stout in appearance, with an off-white very short head. Scents of caramel and hop. Slightly watery, slightly bitter, quite sweet. Very carbonated. In mouth it has caramel and sugar, maybe some strawberries and cream.

Black Isle, Scotland august 05. I thougth this would be a typical, sweet, malty and boring beer - but I was fooled. The color is dark brown, the head nice and the aroma is malty with notes of caramel. The flavour has notes of roasted malt, caramel, a bit of chocolate and a light sweetness. The finish has a very weak bitterness. It has a lot of taste in spite of the low ABW (2.8), and if you find this beer, you definitely should try it!

Retired and I am little surprised as I bought this in Amsterdam two years ago. A great beer at 2.8% but I like a little more body and abv-s to my beers. Page 305 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide and only 322 of his 500 Classic Brews to go.

500ml bottle. Pours almost black, but with a brown rather than a reddish colour when held to the light; off-white head fades quickly; malty aroma; sweet malty taste with a dry, nutty content; dryish finish.
