Commercial Description:
Available filtered and pasteurised in bottles and cans.
Contract brewed by Burtonwood for Ushers (Refresh UK).
By the turn of the 20th century Mild was very popular and bottled ales were growing fast. In 1902, Manns Whitechapel brewery produced the first bottled mild and brown ale was born.
Since the Fifties mass market brands of bitter and lager have grown strongly, at the expense of brown. With brown ale volumes in decline, most brewers withdrew their brands, Manns being a notable exception.

Rich, stouty ruby-black body with dirty tan head. Aroma is evocative of cabbage-sodden farts. But nonetheless a delicately bready tonic one could drink out of a watering can without falling over.

Didn’t realise the low abv when I bought this, my heart sank when I noticed it, but it’s not like I just drink to get drunk...is it?..is it??? Anyway, this has a dense dark colour with a thinnish brown head, the nose is rich and malty, perhaps a bit one dimensional, but it’s what I was looking for so I cant grumble really. Palate is slightly sweet, again I expected that, it is a bit on the light side though, I was looking for a bit of body. Overall, not a bad beer, perhaps more in a mild style than a brown ale...ok tho!

Burnt smokey malt aroma with the aroma of something dead??? Dark brown colour with very poor head and no lacing. Burnt malt flavour but very thin. Flat palate.

A dark reddish brown coloured beer with a light, frothy beige head. The nose is of sweet, rich caramel and very malty. The taste is sweet, caramel and toffee, with the malty undertones - similar to ‘Caramalz’!(Bottle - from the King’s Head, Thornham, Norfolk).

30 Jan 06 - Sweet malt and hop aroma. Black-brown colour, low head and poor lacing. Slightly sweet malt and plain flavour. Flat, thin, sweet malt and slight bitter finish. In a word.... ’PLAIN’.

A Mes rate: 50cl bottle from Asda. Must say I enjoyed this (enjoyed???) more than I thought I would considering the abv. Quite sweet, little bit of chocolate milk in there and something mildly fruity. Nothing much going on palate wise as you would expect but overall much better than I thought it would be. Couldn’t drink more than one though.

Interesting to see such a low rating... I thought this was excellent! Sweet, nutty, chocolate and brown malt aroma. Clear mahogany brown with tight, dense, fine bubbled, creamy, tan head that lasts forever and coats the glass. Sweet, nutty, biscuity, chocolate malt flavourwith low, offsetting dark malt finishing bitterness. Surprisingly dry, medium body with moderate carbonation providing for lively effervescence on the tongue. Bottle (BB JUN 2006).
