Commercial Description:
Available filtered and pasteurised in bottles and cans.
Contract brewed by Burtonwood for Ushers (Refresh UK).
By the turn of the 20th century Mild was very popular and bottled ales were growing fast. In 1902, Manns Whitechapel brewery produced the first bottled mild and brown ale was born.
Since the Fifties mass market brands of bitter and lager have grown strongly, at the expense of brown. With brown ale volumes in decline, most brewers withdrew their brands, Manns being a notable exception.

Interesting to see such a low rating... I thought this was excellent! Sweet, nutty, chocolate and brown malt aroma. Clear mahogany brown with tight, dense, fine bubbled, creamy, tan head that lasts forever and coats the glass. Sweet, nutty, biscuity, chocolate malt flavourwith low, offsetting dark malt finishing bitterness. Surprisingly dry, medium body with moderate carbonation providing for lively effervescence on the tongue. Bottle (BB JUN 2006).

Bottle from Sainsburys. Very dark ruby. No head. Not a lot of nose, slightly acidic in mouth with some hop on end. OK beer just not a lot of flavour

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Dark ruby with beige head. Aroma of sweet malt, caramelly, reflected in taste which is also quite sweet and toffee like. Little bit of roast at the end. Not bad, but not a patch on the many excellent draught milds out there.

Bottled. Aroma of butterscotch, malts and light hops. Dark brown color, small brown head, good lace. Light sweet, light butterscotch, caramel, light nutty, bread and cookie. Light sticky and light dry in the finish from the hops. Enormous surprise and best low alcohol beer I ever had. Not complex like the bigger brothers but still very flavorfull.

Interesting dinosaur of this now forgotten style. Dark clear brown with a thin tan head and no lace. Very low aroma of toffee and cookie. Palate is very thin, even watery, with mostly caramel malt. Not terribly sweet, but not bitter either. Very mild indeed.

ABV: Dark brown in colour with a small tan head. Mild caramely malt aroma, very subtle though. Flavour is sweet, light caramel malt flavours, with a slightly bitter finish. Suprisingly bigger in body than I expected for the ABV. Still quite watery though. Perfectly drinkable.
