Commercial Description:
Available filtered and pasteurised in bottles and cans.
Contract brewed by Burtonwood for Ushers (Refresh UK).
By the turn of the 20th century Mild was very popular and bottled ales were growing fast. In 1902, Manns Whitechapel brewery produced the first bottled mild and brown ale was born.
Since the Fifties mass market brands of bitter and lager have grown strongly, at the expense of brown. With brown ale volumes in decline, most brewers withdrew their brands, Manns being a notable exception.

Deep deep ruby red brown under a medium size sudsy mid tan head. Aroma is somewhat artifical cola and biscuity malt, something soapy and a fair bit of albumen. Palate is flat and mushy. Flavour is watery cola sweet malt with low stale bitterness becoming a touch stronger in the finish. Reminds me a lot of the dreaded Heineken Oud Bruin. When I ordered it in Holland, the barman said, "You do not want to drink that beer sir", when I insisted be brought me the beer and waited until I had tasted it. When I tasted it and screwed my face up, his face broke into a faint "I told you so smile" and went about his business.

Half a bottle left over from a recipe I was cooking (beef and leek hotpot. Sweet and malty with nuttiness, chocolate and toffee. Pretty good for 2.8% for only a £1 from tescos. Only problem was it got a bit sweet for me.

Southern English Brown ales, like this one, are all but nonexistent in the market place, so I have no real beer to relate this too. At 2.8%, I was rather hesitant at first and a little sceptical at it’s contract brewing status, but over all it turned out to be a decent quaffer. Tasted from the bottle and poured into a tall tulip glass. A tight short beige head formed atop a clear, deep ruby brown body. Good malty aroma, buttery, with hints of chocolate and husky grains. In the mouth, toasted malts dominated its reasonably full palate. Quite smooth and lightly carbonated, with flavours of cocoa powder, roasted grain and caramel. Quite sweet throughout, but balanced by the darker malts, and it finishes off with medium length, malty swallow. Excellent blend for it’s low gravity, quite flavoursome and a good beer for the designated drivers amongst us. Not a bad drop at all!!

This is an interesting beer to find in this part of the world - the only other Mild I’ve ever seen is Black Cat. Nice clear brown-deep red colour, OK yellowy head. Aroma of brown sugar, grape and tomato juices and rust. Initially tastes rather sweet but it balances out well enough, with a slight roastiness and a bit of bitterness. More grape juice character, quite thin body. Didn’t really rock my world but I’m glad I got to try it.

Dark brown in colour with tinges of red. Aroma of malt and meaty. Taste is on the smooth side with light sweetness and hints of chocolate. Enjoyed this beer. Cheers!

A deep red beer with a light brown head. The aroma is sweet roasted with notes of chocolate, while the flavor is sweet with notes of caramel and chocolate. The body is thin.
