Commercial Description:
Available filtered and pasteurised in bottles and cans.
Contract brewed by Burtonwood for Ushers (Refresh UK).
By the turn of the 20th century Mild was very popular and bottled ales were growing fast. In 1902, Manns Whitechapel brewery produced the first bottled mild and brown ale was born.
Since the Fifties mass market brands of bitter and lager have grown strongly, at the expense of brown. With brown ale volumes in decline, most brewers withdrew their brands, Manns being a notable exception.

Whoa! This comes in a red can and boasts it's the "original brown ale". Noticeably sweet (much more so than Newcastle Brown), dark and opaque. It's like a schwarzbier. Quite rich and malty. Excellent.

Interesting to see such a low rating... I thought this was excellent! Sweet, nutty, chocolate and brown malt aroma. Clear mahogany brown with tight, dense, fine bubbled, creamy, tan head that lasts forever and coats the glass. Sweet, nutty, biscuity, chocolate malt flavourwith low, offsetting dark malt finishing bitterness. Surprisingly dry, medium body with moderate carbonation providing for lively effervescence on the tongue. Bottle (BB JUN 2006).

An absolutely delightful surprise when I was just looking for a cheap and cheerful bottle for dinner at home. Pours with a big, loosely structured head that dissipates moderately quickly to reveal just a deep brown slightly syrupy beer. The flavor is sweet up front, sweet in mid-palate, and sweet in the finish, but in between it manages to produce some roasted malts, nuttiness, enough caramel/toffee to kill a good-sized moose with, and fruity notes up, down, and sideways. And then you read the label: 2.8% abv. What a wonderful concoction for 2.8%--makes for an excellent lunch-time accompaniment to something with a bit of salt, such as a ham sandwich or a sausage roll.

The DM & Hotstuff’s European Honeymoon trip beer number 12. This bottled brew from SilkTork in London poured a nice head that left behind a good lacing. The body contained carbonation, was nearly opaque and dark ruby red brown in color. Its aroma contained notes of mild dark molasses. Its mouth feel was smooth and mild. Its flavor contained sweet dark malt notes.

Soft ,smooth caramelly aroma, maybe touches of toffee, a firm but gentle malt sweetness, balanced by the faintest of hops. I’m stunned how enjoyable this was, given its 2.8% ABV . There is nothing is the U.S. even close to this. It so much tasted like an enjoyable ale.Got through a trade with a wonderful, good English doctor I met at Oktoberfest this year

Bottle, lovely nutty aroma and pours a real dark brown. This beer has a sweet malty after taste. One of the best beers of this style.
