Lots of hops and caramel. Really enjoyable. If your into malty brews these guys are the malt masters. zizzybalubba (371), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA

Loved it. geezerbeer (3), USA does not count | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 28, 2007 bomber, purchased from Marin Brewing Company direct. "burbon barrel aged" bottled 3/21/07. pours like treacle, as expected.
aroma like a dessert wine, caramel and only slight alcohol considering the 9% tag. I’m new at the rating game but certainly can’t taste bourbon. sweet, heavy. very mellow for a strong barleywine, very much enjoying it.
I have openers regret, feel like it’s going to get better. not to worry, I have a few more :). DuffMan (2756), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 13, 2008 Hazy golden-tinged brown, dense tan head. Enticing aromas of burnt sugar, toffee, faint candied fig, and faint woody hops. Big rich malty palate, with flavours of demarara sugar, toffee, fig paste, dried cherries, and a solid woody hop finish. Excellent! Kinz (2205), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 14, 2004 Draft at brewpub. Deep burgundy, decent head. Dark fruity aroma, like ripe blackberries. Malty sweet, with raisin and currant notes. Faint note of the pepsin candy gum I used to get in my Halloween bucket during my youth. Hint of hop bitterness in finish. A good brew. stubby (326), Santee, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | May 15, 2004 Great barleywine. I like the mild bitterness on the finish, probably from a roasted malt more than a boiling hop. One of my favorites with Old Nick and Hog Heaven. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 4, 2007 Original sample courtesy of Pailhead. Also tried at Hard Liver, update those in due time. Brown with tannish/off-white head, fades to thin film. Heavy lacing. Huge toffee and caramel aroma up front, pretty big pine resin background, hints of citrus. Flavor exactly as aroma indicates, slight cardboard character through the middle is the only difference. Well balanced for a big beer. Mouthfeel/palate very thick and syrup like. I’m against the grain, but really dig it. BeerLimey (1873), California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 13, 2002 Very dark, bold look, but unimpressive head. Deep fruit malty aroma is predictable, but there’s a also a zippy hoppiness, with red pepper spice and mustiness. Thick malty palate, chocolaty, smooth, creamy. Nice hop bite in the finish that does an excellent and controlled balancing job. For such a heavy ale there seems to be an appetizing freshness about it.
