Strange. Whatever. It was very good. Amber with a frothy white head. Nose was very light. Malt. Hops. Citrus. Yeast. Alcohol. Sufficient body and pleasant mouthfeel. Slight carbonation. Flavor was crisp and clean and refreshing. Fruity and malty. Damned good stuff from Marin (ma-RIN, for Alcoholist). SubstanceT (1091), Saint Louis, Missouri, USA

First off, glad to see that this is not a "wheat" beer as I thought. It was definately more of a barleywine. The colour is clear golden with a medium medium lasting white head. The nose is hoppy with an underlying maltyness. The taste is mostly malts with this cool bite of hops. Pretty good. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England

A hoppy, wheaty barleywine, loads of almost bready sort of malts and lots of spicy hops, lemony and piney. Pretty decent stuff. mardermax (71), santa cruz, California, USA

The wheat has an interesting after taste, and the alcohol is masked well.. im enjoying this, nice and thick, feels good in the mouth.. really impressed actually, compared to the first one i tried, one of the more hoppier barley wines... | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 24, 2004 Thick gold, oily looking, sweet nose of grain and ripe citrusy hops. Good counterpoint of wheat to the barley richness, clean tasting and that tired old "perilously drinkable" schtick. Satites yet it’s hard to resist the urge for more. A cotton pickin’ smash! Great balance between traditional barleywine flavor and wheat flavor. Nice wheat flavors in finish. Great bitterness lasting through the finish. An incredible and original beer. Underrated. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 16, 2004 A very unique and interesting beer worth trying, regardless of one's predispositions toward certain styles; Malty, sweet and strong like a barleywine, but piney, hoppy and bitter like a double IPA; The finish is somewhat dry in comparison to the initial flavor and fairly bitter; The nose has a malty, sweet, barleywine aroma with a mild hoppiness; The apricot color is darker than expected; White head has average retention but leaves little lacing jazz88 (2239), San Francisco, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 3, 2004 Updated: Apr 17, 2007Rating #1 Bottle of the 2004 vintage (7 3 7 3 16). A lush golden color with a nice head retention. Thick and syrupy with a fine spice. Rating #2 of the 2007 vintage ( 6 3 7 3 15). Golden color with a white head. A sweet and dessert wine like aroma. Clearly a wheat beer in aroma and in flavor but in each case it is overcome by sweet, high alcohol, intense malts, and hops. A radical take on the barleywine.
