Maritime Pacific Imperial Pale Ale

Bottle: Golden, fairly clear, moderate off-white foamy head, attractive lacing, light carbonation.   Malty/cereal aroma, definite hop punch on the nostrils.   Smooth malty start, subtle bitterness that begins to sneak on you before the finish.   Seems a fairly light American Strong Ale, but quite appropriate for the Imperial Pale Ale title.   Decent hop and malt balance at the finish, with the hop bitterness lingering well beyond.   Not hoppy enough for an IPA, at least here on the west coast, but definitely an assertive Pale Ale.   Body and mouthfeel seem quite hefty, at least rather fulfilling.   This is most definitely a big Pale Ale.   I can see why this is one of their more popular brews, locally at least.   Definitely worth a try on a visit to Seattle.

Draft at McCormick and Schmicks, Seattle. Cloudy bright mandarin orange color, very nice color saturation and a firm light tan head. Smells like astringent, acidic orange, sweet malts and citric hops everywhere. Not as abrasive with the hops as some other IIPAs, which I couldn’t stand, but heavy on the orange sweetness, covering up some of the other hop notes. A decent beer, but I don’t really like the feeling of liquid nails pouring down my throat.

Floral hop aroma with some malty sweetness in the nose. Cloudy golden in appearance with a quick fluffy head and lots of lacing. Lots of hops in the flavor, some grapefuit juice for sure, daces lightly on the tongue, and a little burn at the end to remind you that this is an Imperial Pale. Very enjoyable pale, indeed. on tap at the jolly roger - tasted both the regular draught and the double dry-hopped version. both had typically big lychee and pine aromas, some mango sweetness and medium bitterness. the dry-hopped version had a chewier finish but otherwise there was no great difference and both were nice

Perhaps the bottle I got was old, but in any case it did not have the pungent aroma of Cascade hops that I was hoping for. It is wheaty, slightly metallic, crisp, and the hops taste more like they are from Germany--but here, again, I may have had a less-than-fresh bottle. Notwithstanding, it is a good beer.

Clear, pale amber color, nice, fresh white head atop, settling into a narrow ring. Aroma, citrus, grapefruit, peachy, banana, a bit of pine, pineapple, even, but none too pronounced. A little slick, and oily. Mmm, big impact on arrival! Huge entry on the palate, brimming with hoppitude, bristling with piney resins, juicy, tarry associations, just a hop-tastic blaze set loose on the tastebuds. Mellows out right quick, and there’s just enough malty feel in the body to provide appropriate balance. Just enough, though, not a plentitude or anything, the hop phalanx at the for is still in firm command. Taste like a pale ale, but with this blaring, blazing, utterly reckless cadre of hop devastation setting fire to any semblance of balance...not that that’s a bad thing...in fact, I like it! Quite an interesting bottle of brew they got going on! Cheers to that!

Peppery, very sweat alc with herbal hops, mild body, a bit more bitter than I expected, not bad.

Tap at brewpub, Toasty, nutty, citrusy nose. Brownish orange color. Small white head. Bitter flavors. Grapefruit, honey, grainy. Thin body, big bitter finish. Was dry hopped version. made for a nice touch. Cool floor at pub.
