Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

i thought this was a pretty bad IPA, had a bit of a floral aroma, tasted like I was chewing on a wild flower leaf. bad bitter dry aftertaste. why can’t the founders(english) of the IPA make a good one?

on a hot summer afternoon one might be tempted to order a cold lager ... if he hasn’t got the chance to get hold of an Old Empire IPA that is ... IPA’s are perfect thirst quenchers to start with and this one tops it with a overwhelming taste of fresh hops and a marvelous bitter aftertaste .... a great brew in an impressive bottle ...

Bottle@Home. Perfumy, grainy and hoppy aroma. Dark yellow color, small white head, fair lace. Light sweet, nasty bitterness, grainy, perfumy, medium body. Plain and dull.

A Mes rate: Bottle from some supermarket or other.
Gold with an amber tinge and just a rim of white bubbles. Quite tartly sweet. Alcohol shows quite clearly. Some nuts and malt and a slight hoppy bitterness in the finish. Boring.

Pale orange colour. Fresh hop aroma. Flavour is quite sharp and citrusy. An easy drink with a dryer finish with even a hint of ginger at the end.

(Bottle) Pours amber. The aroma is sweet and fruity up front with notes of woody, earthy and light bready malt in the background. Undertones of grass, hops, earth and pineapple. Fruits, bread and light spices in the flavour with hints of herbs, grass, mild pepper and a watery, syrupy pineapple sting. Light bitter with a light woody and rather hard mouthfeel. Not that sweet but quite sugary. Light but lingering bitterness. Light bodied. A good example of a poor English IPA.

500 ml bottle. A soft carbonatied copper colored body under a thin greyish head quickly fading to a tiny ring of foam. Modest aromas of light malt-sweetness, earthy and grassy hops, citrus... with some unusual whiffs of chemicals... Medium bitter grassy hop flavor. Low malt level. Some dry fruitiness in the aftertaste. Medium body. Light bitter and ’perfumed’ finish.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Pours a golden amber colour. Nose of cream, malt and hops. Body is weak and oily. Taste is overly of malt a sugar. Hops taste below par to give it a hoppy fininsh. I’m not a fan.
