Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

Bottle (500ml - clear .... sigh). Shared with blankboy & tupalev, blankboy’s bottle from England. Clear pale amber, smallish frothy off-white head. Borderline skunky, resolves to grassy/pungent euro hops, clover sweetness. Taste is nice tangy clover sweetness & grassy pungent hops. Average body, decent life to it, bitter aftertaste - decent patio beer (stupid clear bottle!).

[Sampled in 2004.] As I wrote: A ordinary fruity welltasting IPA, but now I see it is an ESB, which I didn’t see 3 years ago. Fruits, vanilla, flowers, light grapes. A summer IPA, maybe.

Bottled. Light amber color with a white disappearing head. Aroma is citric and hops. Flavour is complex with sting of hops. Lasting aftertaste lures you to take an other sip. Nice one.

500ml Bottle. Flat and orange, no real head, but fizzy in the mouth. Not much aroma either However, very bitter taste, some malt, and some cabbage, but mostly bitter which lasts for ever. Dries the mouth, and will leave you thirsty, presumably for something else.

Bottle, pours a clear and golden amber with a large foamy off-white head. A strong hoppy aroma, slightly dusty but with a touch of citrus. A strong sour and sharp hoppy palate, dominating the biscuity and woody malt flavours. Some sweetness left in the finish. OK this.

A moderately-hoppy aroma with a hint of plum on the nose. Not much head to rave about but I found it surprisingly flavoursome and increasingly complex, especially the finish. It starts with a dry, bitter, even salty, tang and moves towards a sweet, kiwi-fruit, muscat with hints of bubblegum. A drinkable compliment with food. Easily the best Marston I’ve had.
