Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

Boiled-down watery hops in the snout. Creamy palate. Slightly biscuity maltiness with a hint of wood. Abruptly bitter finish, but not of the hoppy kind. Golden amber with a snowy slick of suds. Some faintly whiskeyish malt. But all in all like drinking cardboard. (Re-rate, upgraded from 2.7) Looks and smells like Corona initially (clear bottle?). Rabbit hutch and grapefruit aroma, fusty English hop, menthol, ganja, hint of Pickled Onion Monster Munch. That’s got to be a 7. Some surprisingly zesty/earthy hop flavours have survived the boil. Biscuity/oaty malt late on, melding into almondy booze. Nearly enough hop zest and bitterness to qualify as an IPA.Quite a decent, hop-driven pasteurised ale.

Aroma: very english, slightly musty, alot of hops, vaguely sourish, sweetly malty, acrid.
Appearance: golden copper orange, clear body. Nice, fairly thick, orangetinted, pale head.
Flavour: malty sweet, stale, applelike, hopbitterness, weak, peanutlike. Not good.
Palate: thin, slimy, almost stale feeling, watery juice.

Bottle at home. Pours a dark golden with a thin, white head. Aroma is heavy on the hops, with some hint of apricot. Good hoppy flavour with some citrus and a sting of alcohol. Very bitter finish.

Sharp and citric hop aroma and flavours, rich smooth malt, good colour, discernable alcohol. Moreish - carbonation fine for my taste, but agree heartily with HarryFlashman that this is a great beer to go with a curry. Recommended.

What a beauty! A deliciously strong IPA. Fruity, hoppy and sweet in a good way. I liked this little baby a lot. Lacked some carbonation to make it a true great, but pretty deuced good and compliments spicy food like curry preferctly.
