Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

Fresh, leafy hops aroma, some malt also, dark amber, pours a small cream head. Nice hoppy flavour, with a decent amount of hops.Light bodied, balanced, easy drinking. Pretty good.

Bottle, 500ml. A deep golden colour with a small head. Fruity aroma of orange, banana, hops and yeast. Some pasteurised notes. Taste is sweet with roasted malt, citrus and alcohol. A sweet finish with citrus and strong bitterness. Moderate carbonation. Quite good, but could be better.

(Bottle BB 10/09/07) Slightly toffee-like and slightly malty aroma. Golden colour, clear, slightly sparkling and small to average, white, more or less fully diminishing head with a hint of lacing. Fruity (citrus), malty, moderately bitter and very slightly toffee-like flavour. Light to medium-bodied and lively carbonated palate with a hint of metalness. 01/09/06

Bottle. Copper-amber body with a small bready white head. The aroma is bready with fresh leafy hops, and cookies. The flavour is rather bitter, astringent, and fairly refreshing. Abundant bread in an essentially solid ESB.

Bottle. Pours amber with bright amber white head. Refreshing, slightly mineral aroma, gentle hop nose. Medium bodied with clean hoppy character. Neat refreshing session bitter.

Orange colored, little white head. Dry, bitter, fruity and slightly alcoholic aroma. Indeed, dryness comes up nicely. Medium bodied. Flavor is also slightly one-dimensional: dry, fruity. slightly caramelly and hoppy. Aftertaste has also some citrus tones.

Bottle picked up at Morrisons, Aylesbury, Tues 8th August. Thought that I’d already rated this but evidently not. Light amber coloured, very clear quite malty little bit toffee and chewy didn’t really strike me as a 5.7%er not at all, touch on the sweet side with some hop presence, this was fine enough but I’ve had a lot better.
