Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

50 cl bottle, Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Deep golden, very little head. Mixed aroma of skunk and rosewater. Almost soaplike flavor with a creeping but mild spice finish.

Bottle: Poured a clear orangey color ale with a medium bubbly head with minimal retention and no lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt with lightly dry and astringent hoppy notes. Taste is dominated by weak dry caramel malt notes with a dry finish. Body is average with OK carbonation. Lacking complexity or floral notes of English hops to be a beer I would drink again.

I like these IPAs more and more. Low carbonation and then nice flat acidic flat taste. A little metallic but in a good way.

bottle, from a superstore somewhere in southern Wales. Deep golden colour, mid-sized head. Fruity nose. Very malty, full-bodied with lots of citrusy hop flavours and hints of bitter orange marmalade. Good.

Deep golden color with a small head. Fruity aroma of orange, banana, hops and some yeast. Very dry flavor with some herbal notes. Well balanced premium bitter.

[500ml bottle shared with Jim - cheers!] Pale amber, negligible head, no carbonation. Dominated by oak and vanilla; some granite minerality behind it, and maybe a quick daub of orange zest behind the ears. Long, dry, woody finish, with just a little bitterness. Enjoyed this - reminded me a lot of Innis & Gunn beers.

Copper brown beer with medium blond-beige head. Malts, some aromatic hops, some sweetness and musty aroma. Flavour is quite sweet and malty, grassy, basic bitter. Nice to drink with balanced carbonation. Basic bitter, IPA is reallly overestimated; there should be more quality and effort in every section, without musty, then I would be in different feelings.
