Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

Clear amber colour with a thin off white head. Malty, light skunky aroma with notes of some caramel sweetness. Malty and sweet flavor with a solid bitterness. Dry and bitter finish.

Tasted 29/03/2006. Shared 500ml bottle, at Neil Miller’s Cellar-Vate tasting. Beautiful, bright, copper-gold. Quite pale but vibrant, with lovely pillowy white head that, unfotunately, doesn’t hold or lace. Very grassy nose, some pepper and a hint of boiled sugar. Grassy hops, again, dominate the mouth also. Little malt profile in the skinny, lightish side of ligh-medium, mouth weight. Low-medium carbonation. Some spiciness through the middle and a short bitter finish. This ale was the last of the tasting (a very nice group of NZ micro pale ales) and it didn’t stand up to the competition.

A deep, amber gold colour, with quite a strong white head. The nose is clean, with a strong, hoppy nose with hints of malt. The taste bitter with strong, hop and malt tones. Has a smooth finish. (Bottle).

Like a Holsten, it has a like a Honey taste, but not really pleasant, it really gold in colour, a little resembles the taste.

Fantastic IPA, an archetype for other IPAs! Orange amber, full of lively hop aroma and flavour, truly excellent.
