Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

True to the IPA style (initially malty ending in a dry bitter finish), but not very exciting. The bottle is nicely shaped and all but clear (why?). The beer is listed as a "premium bitter/ESB" - maybe the IBU isn’t high enough?

Big fluffy head, dark golden to light amber coloured, clear; big floral hoppiness in the nose, traces of sulphur, malt and honey; initial slight malty sweetness gives way to a moderate bitter-aromatic flavour, ending in a dry, long lasting bitter-fruity finish; a quite fine IPA, quite pleasant, very smooth, refreshing........

Bottled. Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Hoppy nose with fruity hints. Strong hopped flavour with some sweetishbitter fruity hints. Wellbalanced, and hops grows in the long aftertaste. Mouthdrying. Aroma reminds of a bitter, while flavour is very IPAish. 5 2 7 3 10

. Bottled (re-rate Dec 2006). Copperish golden colour, mediumsized white foamy head, lacing. Fruity and flowery hops in aroma along with some grass and caramel. Flavour is flowery hops, caramel and nice bitterish grass in aftertaste. Refreshing. 6 3 7 4 13.

Light amber in appearance with a number of largish bubbles clinging desperately to the side of the glass. A grain-forward aroma, plus layers of bitter hop, pleasant skunk and banana peel. The fairly dry palate carries a medium-strength bitterness and average length for an IPA. Refreshing and palate-cleansing, but could use a little more pop and complexity.

short white head on a golden body. It has the charasteristic hoppy taste of an IPA. Nice drinking, but could be a bit stronger on the hops and malt.

Very pale amber no head. Light piney hop aroma. Bisquit malt and typical english hops, some citrus, tinny herbal hop exit. Lightbodied, grassy aftertaste.
