Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

Bottle
Very pale amber no head. Light piney hop aroma. Bisquit malt and typical english hops, some citrus, tinny herbal hop exit. Lightbodied, grassy aftertaste.

Bottled, Pasteurised. Orange gold colour with short head. Quite a bit maltier than its cask bretheren, softer too, I would hope for more hop twang than this has to call itself an IPA. Nicely Burtonised though, with a chalky watery base, then a soft fruitiness comes through with a fullish flavour. Quite a drinkable beer but could have done with more oomph.

Bottle. Grassy aroma. Golden colour, unstable white head. Flowery and grassy flavour from the hops. The aromatic hoppiness is fresh and well balanced against the bitterness.

Decent enough for a pasteurised beer. But, like the cask version, I thought it too heavy on soft malt and too lacking in hop wallop to make the grade as a genuine IPA. Full marks for the concept. Unfortunately the execution is competent but uninspired. A bit of sulphur on the nose - no surprise for a Marstons beer. 500ml bottle.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Good full bodied Burton IPA. Light golden colour. Aroma of vanilla, hops, slight sulphur smack. Mouthfeel good. Finish of fruity hops, not overly bitter.

Lovely colour and a reasonable white head. Delightful fresh, herby, flowery aroma, like a summer meadow, followed by a refreshing bitterness that lasts well. Good beer.

(Bottle 50 cl) Beautiful, deep amber with a small, dense off-white head. Pronounced aromatic hoppiness well balanced with a light caramel-like malt-sweetness. I don’t agree that this isn’t an IPA (as the brewery also calls it). 270105

Intense hoppy aroma, creamy white head, mostly lasting, nice golden/yellow colour. Heavy bitterness, a good beer.
