Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

Clear, golden ale. Medium sized white head. fresh hoppy aroma. Floral. Hay? Rather mild flavour with firm hoppyness. Some underlying malty sweetness. Lasting bitter finish. Overall a bit dull...

The bottle is beautiful! And the color is a nice, clear amber. Everything else about this beer is below average. Aroma is best described as stench. And the flavor is sour and reminds me of dirty socks. Bitter in a bad way with no roundness. The first beer I couldn’t finish.

Light golden very clear with little head. Roasted malt nose with faint hops in the background. Rich mouthfeel with an overall dryness. Richnuttiness in the malt with a light hop bite but overall more of a floral fragrant hop quality. On the finish the hops do show much stronger. Not bad.

Bottled. This looks great! gold in colour, head is firm and white and lasts well. Nose is clean and fresh, bursts with immense hoppy aromas. WOW!!! that’s some mouthful, big and full flavoured, refreshing & satisfying, finish cuts a bit short, but hey! that’s not a big fault is it? Fantastic stuff, V.W. Kelso £1.79/4 for £6...may not last tho’ knowing that company..PS. can’t understand the low overall percentile score, try it anyway.

Copper brown, steady creamy head. Aromas has hops - and grassy, dishwater aroma - not very IPA-like (like bottle claims style to be). Medium-bodied. Grassy, fruity hoppy flavor. Not bitter enough for IPA and quite average for ESB. Mild bitter aftertaste. Quite uninteresting.

Golden crisp. No head at all. The flavor is heavily dominated by large quantities of hops. In its very dry environment it makes the beer rather one-dimensional, but still enjoyable. It’s bitter for sure.
