Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it’s pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston’s Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

0,5 Bottle @ CArrefour Gerakas in Athens. I was happy to find an english IPA here in Greece (which turned out to be an ESB but thats another story). Pours amber with an average white head. The aroma is quite faint of hops, grass and some caramel. Tastes sweet manlty, with hoppy notes. Alcohol is quite traceable despite the not so high ABV. The bitterness is nice.

Bottle. Low but lasting off-white creamy head. Beautiful clear amber body. Dry and dusty barley malt aroma. Relatively dry but not especielly bitter barley malt flavor for an IPA as the bottle claims to be. It does however have a nice long and bitter aftertaste. Low carbonation.

Smells pretty much like a barely mediocre lager. Thin head and golden body aren’t that enticing either. The flavour doesn’t do much to improve upon it all. Would be interesting in a blind testing. I wouldn’t bet on guessing it’s an IPA and not a fairly ordinary lager.

Bottle, 25th Dec 08. Amber, small white head. Lively. Strength well hidden but rather poor taste over the finish. A bit chemical and as weak and under-flavoured as ever.

A tiny bit skunky and a bit too strong for a good session ale. Not a bad beer all round though. Light in colour but decent tasting and not a bad effort from Marstons here. I would drink again.

Bottle at Ellos housewarming. Clear amber colour with not much head. Skunky naastee aroma. Malty sweet flavour with a trace nuttiness. Not pleasant. A very poor stab at an IPA. Avoid.

Bottle at Crown Rivers JDW, London Heathrow, 23 Nov 2008. Pale amber colour with frothy, white head. Fruity nose with notes of citrus peel, apricots and floral hops. Fruity taste with biscuity malt, apricots, citrus and mandarin. A slight alcohol bite in a finish with a decent citrussy bitterness. Medium body, sweetish. Nice one. In short: English strong ale with a twist of citrussy Cascade.

500ml bottle-pours white head and gold color. Aroma is nice, lime, some grain. More Mexican Vienna Lager. Taste is lime, secondary grain/light malt-slight caramel, hops bitterness with some herbal. OK carbonation. Dryish finish. Easy beer. Thanks jwc215 for picking this out.
