Commercial Description:
Bottled - Pasteurised, 500ml.

With it's pale appearance, strong hoppy taste and higher alcoholic strength Marston's Old Empire comprises all the genuine characteristics of a true India Pale Ale, which were necessary to last the 3 month long journey from Burton to Bombay.
Old Empire is brewed using Optic malt, a subtle and paler grain that will allow other flavours to come through on the palate. Goldings and Fuggles hops are added to this brew, which is then late hopped with the American Cascade variety for extra hop strength.

Only ratings of the bottled version should be entered here. The cask version has a separate entry.

500ml clear bottle. Deep gold colour, fluffy and creamy white cap with decent retention. Aroma is malty, soft perfumy/citrusy sweet hop notes. Flavour of fruity malt, citrus/orange notes. Moderate bitterness with some hop aftertaste. Medium bodied, creamy in the mouth, light carboantion. Good drinkability. A lot better than I was expecting, especially coming from a clear bottle.

Bottle. Low but lasting off-white creamy head. Beautiful clear amber body. Dry and dusty barley malt aroma. Relatively dry but not especielly bitter barley malt flavor for an IPA as the bottle claims to be. It does however have a nice long and bitter aftertaste. Low carbonation.

Smells pretty much like a barely mediocre lager. Thin head and golden body aren’t that enticing either. The flavour doesn’t do much to improve upon it all. Would be interesting in a blind testing. I wouldn’t bet on guessing it’s an IPA and not a fairly ordinary lager.

Bottle, 25th Dec 08. Amber, small white head. Lively. Strength well hidden but rather poor taste over the finish. A bit chemical and as weak and under-flavoured as ever.

A tiny bit skunky and a bit too strong for a good session ale. Not a bad beer all round though. Light in colour but decent tasting and not a bad effort from Marstons here. I would drink again.

Bottle at Ellos housewarming. Clear amber colour with not much head. Skunky naastee aroma. Malty sweet flavour with a trace nuttiness. Not pleasant. A very poor stab at an IPA. Avoid.
