Commercial Description:
SILVER MEDAL WINNER AT THE 2005 GREAT INTERNATIONAL BEER COMPETITION, in Providence RI. In your face and robust as they come. Part of the base malt was smoked over beechwood. Added to the two kinds of pale malt, two colors and strengths of crystal malt, plus both black and chocolate malts and you have a flavor force! Chinook hops bitter the beer and the lovely Glacier hop adds flavor and aroma to round out the package. This porter is richly assertive. Hints of smoke around the edges blend with the floral hop, roast and caramel flavors that lead the palate charge. Inhale the aroma, savor the flavor, enjoy this glass of black gold. OG: 1.062 FG: 1.014 ABV: 6.2% IBU: 44

Cask at GBBF. Black with a small tan head. Rather weak aroma with fruit, bacon smoke, and some roasted notes. Dryish and very smoked flavour with licorice notes.

Cask (gravity) @ GBBF 09, Great British Beer Festival, Earls Court Exhibition Centre, London, England.
Alc. 5.8%. Clear dark brown black color with a small to average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, caramel, berry, smoke - ash, wood. Flavor is light heavy sweet and bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20090805]

A Mes rate. Cask at GBBF.
Almost black with a decent beige head. Nice smoky porter with some good wooden notes and a lot more hoppage than I was expecting. The malt and hops combine well to give it a strong fruity character. Lasting bitter finish. Not really worthy of being classed as a smoked beer but nice enough all the same.

At GBBF 2009. Black lasting beige head. Slight smoke, some grapefruit. Bit of plastic. But pretty decent overall.

Poured from gravity cask into one-third pint glass. Wholesome pitch black body under a naked surface. Smoked, sweet malty to the nose added by grassy hops. Dark fruits in flavour quite well balanced with smoked malts leading to a hoppy bitter ending. Not enough bodied, a bit diluted, but still a joy to the palate (GBBF, 05.08.2009).

Cask at GBBF 09 ... brown black ... light woody smoked malt nose ... again light smoke ... lots of soft deep roast malts.
