Commercial Description:
This is one of my favorite beer styles. Robust Porter. Dark and inviting, filled with a myriad of flavors that will change as you drink it down. Chilled, porter shows its roast malt chops and hop bite. Bitter chocolate also comes through. As the beer warms you get the arrival of sweet malt, toffee, and a creamy texture that can and has been described as 'liquid sex' (thank you Karen Logan for that one). The taste spectrum of this beer style is wonderful. English Maris Otter Malt makes for a more rounded beer flavor, Caramel malt, Chocolate and black roast malts provide the darkness and complexity. The Magnum hop bitters the brew, while Fuggles flavors and Kent Goldings lend a great aroma to the package. I have noticed that I have this unintended knack for naming my beers with a certain reference in mind that is totoally different from what other people end up perceiving. For instance, I used to have an ESB I named 'Muggles' for the two hops I used (Magnum and Fuggles). That was my only reason for the name. Then I had people saying 'oh that's from Harry Potter, right?' I have never read the Harry Potter books so I didn't understand. But you see my point. There is also my 'Golden Perch IPA' which has nothing to do with fish. In this case, Steeplechase Porter was not named after the Horse race nor the track and Field race. Steeplechase to me is an amazing Double Black Diamond run on Aspen Highlands mountain just outside of Aspen, CO. It was on this run in the winter of '99 in a blizzard that I went from a marginal snowboarder to an accomplished one. There was so much snow, every time I wiped out it was like landing on endless piles of soft cushions. They call it hero snow out there. I felt like a hero, invincible, unable to be hurt. So I took more risks and never looked back. Its kinda like being a craft brewer in a way. OG: 1.057 FG: 1.016 ABV: 5.3% IBU: 42

On tap at the brewpub. Served in a pint glass. Dark brown purplish body with a 2 finger brown head. Good amount of lacing coats the glass. Nose is chocolate, coffee & roasted malt. Smooth palate, but dry, thin & a bit chalky. Flavor is bakers chocolate, roasted malt & a hint of vanilla bean.

5 oz sampler at the brewpub in the company of ClarkVV GeuezeLord. Delicate, artistic lacing forms over the well-maintained brown head that caps a purplish-black body....light sweet cocoa nose with touches of cherry and licorice, little roast...nicely malted body, lightly roasty-toasty with touches of dry coffee grounds and bitter baker’s chocolate....things are going well, but the body alas is too thin, a little slick and milky, watery at the very finish. Well, not a bad effort overall.

Dark brown color with a thin light brown head. Mild aroma and flavor of chocolate and roasted malt. The body is light to medium with a dry texture and soft carbonation.
