jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jun 12, 2007 on tap-pours an off white head and brown color with red tint. Aroma is faint medium/dark malt-caramel. Taste is medium/dark malt-smoky/roasty/caramel/chocolate. Faint/secondary hops bite. OK carbonation. Occasional. NachlamSie (1630), Tennessee, USA Apr 25, 2006 draught. Pours a dark brown, a little reddish, with a fading white head akin to that on a glass of cola. The aroma is mild and malty, non-descript. Flavor is of a little chocolate, flat hops which are almost papery, small chalk. This is semi-thin and kind of boring, but drinkable. tronraner (1905), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Apr 6, 2006 Draught. Pours a clear dark burnt red with off-white head. The aroma is clean and, erm, lager-y, with sweet malt, some chocolate, a faint leafy note, and some pepper. The flavor is bitter chocolate, some moderately bitter roastiness, and an ashy finish. A little bit of cardboard comes out in the aftertaste. It gets nuttier as I get down the glass. The body is thinner than I would like. Suttree (2701), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Mar 17, 2006 Balck, or really dark brown. Virtually no head. Peppery, faintly coffee-ish aroma, with maybe a touch of honey, perhaps? Palate seems rather rich at first, but kind of disappears as you finish it. Flavor is coffee, and Oreo cookies with a mildly hoppy finish. Draft at Barley’s Knoxville GeneralGao (3051), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Mar 5, 2006 Draught at the brewpub. Clear dark brown color with foamy white head. No lace. Roasty brown sugar nose with brown sugar again in the flavor along with subtle chocolate. Roasty finish. Not a big fan of Schwarzbiers, in general, but this one is decent. wilkie (1189), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Jan 20, 2004 Slightly off-white head with good retention. Black color lets a little ruby through. Not much aroma-what is there is faint malty, chocolate. Flavor is malty with smoke and caramel-chocolate. Medium body with soft finish and not nearly as dry as the standard German counterpart. gthank (73), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 19, 2002 A nice head over an appropriately dark body, but the head dissipates a bit too quickly. The aroma is satisfyingly smoky. Nothing really to note about the mouth-feel. Flavor-wise, this was a pleasant beer, not ruined with hops (especially Cascade) the way so many recent beers are. Overall, this was a nice drinkable beer, but not really much above average. aracauna (2357), Georgia, USA Sep 17, 2002 Dark beer with good head. Great big caramel, but lacking a lot of the other dark malt flavors I expect from Schwarz.
