Commercial Description:
An organic pale ale brewed with yerba maté, source of the ancient South American tea prized for its energizing and nutritional properties. Mateveza showcases the pairing of organic yerba maté and cascade hops. Yerba maté’s earthy, herbal notes are the perfect compliment to the crisp, citrusy character of the cascade hops. Mateveza is brewed and bottled by Butte Creek Brewing Company, a gold medal winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® that has been brewing organic since 1997.

Pours a hazy orange color with a small white head. Aroma is earthy with a hint of black pepper. Flavor is a decent combination of earthy bitterness with a light citrus flavor. Hint of peach at the finish. Not a bad beer but it definitely makes me feel a little funny.

An orange appearance with little head present. An herbal and citrus aroma. I’m not sure what the hell yerba mate is but this tastes like chewing on grass blades. Some lemons also present in the flavor. This is an odd one but ok I guess.

This spice ale pours a deep orange gold color from a 22oz bottle. Medium sized white foamy head. Aroma is spicy, tea, caramel, floral and earthy. A medium bodied ale. Malts are caramel and not very sweet. Hops are earthy and bitter. Lot of black tea and earthy flavors. Kind of bitter and astringent, citrusy and earthy. Mostly an interplay between the tea and the malts, This is interesting enough to try a couple of time, but I don’t think I would want to drink it regularly. Its sort of growing on me and NOT in a good way. It gets more metallic and bitter as it warms. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is bitter.

Pours a transparent bright copper with a spotty, thin white head. Aroma of lightly sweet pale malt and some interesting earthy spiced notes. Body starts fairly thin and pale malty sweet but has some minty spice balance drying out a lot toward the earthy finish. Interesting, but not all that tasty.

22 oz. bottle from BevMo LaJolla. Pours hazy amber with a large and fluffy off-white head. Interesting aroma, citrus, raw nuts, hints of mint and caramel with a little dustiness. Flavor is mostly bitter and astringent, some toasty malts, with dusty, herby tastes, strong black tea and orange rind. Medium body and gentle carbonation. Hmmm...

Thanks to Oakes for sending this brew my way. Hazy amber beer with a thin white head. Pale malt aroma, some caramel sweetness and light brown sugar. There is a faint hint of diacetyl but also a soft herbal character. The flavour is pretty simple, sweet brown sugar, oregano, and tarragon. Kind of a strange beast, but it’s pretty decent. Further warming brings out a touch of cola-like flavour.
