Commercial Description:
An organic pale ale brewed with yerba maté, source of the ancient South American tea prized for its energizing and nutritional properties. Mateveza showcases the pairing of organic yerba maté and cascade hops. Yerba maté’s earthy, herbal notes are the perfect compliment to the crisp, citrusy character of the cascade hops. Mateveza is brewed and bottled by Butte Creek Brewing Company, a gold medal winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® that has been brewing organic since 1997.

5/17/08 From the bottle. This brew had a strong herbal aroma of sweet malt and flowery notes. Appearance is clear gold with a low white head. Flavor is very herbal, kind of citrus, with notes of fruit skins, malt has an even sweet/sour blend, kind of like wheat, with very low bittering. Mouthfeel is low bodied with a low carb texture and kind of creamy. Overall, interesting, but not delicious.

Dark straw color with a huge rocky head. Big nose of mate, orange peel, herbs and dry pale malts. Medium body with a smooth creamy mouthfeel. Earthy mate driven flavors here with some dusty pale malts and spices. A unique and tasty brew here. Try this for breakfast, mate has lots of caffiene.

This is a bitter beer. However it’s not the usually pungent, heady bitterness of an IPA. Instead it overwhelms the palate with an earthy flavor reminiscent of certain nonalcoholic beverages-which makes sense. At first the flavor may come as a surprise, the froth is almost odorless which gives little warning of the bitterness to come, but one will quickly start to appreciate the briskness of the taste. It’s quite refreshing, like an iced tea or a cold shower.

On tap, poured fizzy pale yellow with a fluffy white head. Nose was a bid funky and bitter. I didn’t think I would like this too much, but it was a free sampler, and I actually found it quite refreshing. Much smoother and sweeter than the nose with a clean finish. I wouldn’t pay for it, but I’d drink a free one if it was hot!

Pours a very hazy amber with a thin but stubborn white head. Smells of oranges, an unusual sweet earthy scent I can’t quite place, herbal tea, I wish I could list all the sensory profile here, but I’ve never had this type of tea before. What I can say is that the beer smells wonderful. Tastes of grapefruit, chamomile tea, white pepper, some lemons, touches of soap and dry malt. There are also lots of spicy hints there. Mouthfeel is full with a finish that yields dry malt, mild bitterness and some herbal tea hints.

Poured an orange color with a white head. smelled like an IPA at first but could also smell herbal scents. The flavor wasn’t as hoppy as it smelled and you could definitely taste the mate. It was a dryer beer. My wife is from Argentina and it inspired me to buy this beer, but... I don’t think I’ll be getting this beer again any time soon. It was OK but not great in any sense.

Brandon, Fl. - Kingdom Liquors - 22 oz bomber. Murky, yet brightly colored peach-orange colored pour with a spritzy white head. Aroma of dried fruit - apricots come to mind - not unpleasant - just not appealing. Flavor is starchy with some faint fruity notes, hard to describe earthy hints, not all that beer-like - more like an herbal tea. Mouthfeel is rather harsh and pasty. The "organicness" of this really jumps out and does not present itself well.

22 oz. Pours a pale yellowish with a bit of a darker hue than a lager. Smells a bit like a weak pale with more of an earthy sense to it. Flavor is much of the same of the nose profile. You can definitely taste the dirt of the mate...which is a nice twist and blends nicely with the hops. Mostly, not that impressive overall.
