Commercial Description:
An organic pale ale brewed with yerba maté, source of the ancient South American tea prized for its energizing and nutritional properties. Mateveza showcases the pairing of organic yerba maté and cascade hops. Yerba maté’s earthy, herbal notes are the perfect compliment to the crisp, citrusy character of the cascade hops. Mateveza is brewed and bottled by Butte Creek Brewing Company, a gold medal winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® that has been brewing organic since 1997.

Pours hazy yellow-orange. Aroma is hops with some grass. Flavor is mild hops with some herbal tea tones to it. Bitter.

Pours a completely opaque orange with large fluffy white head. Aroma is about the only thing this one has going for it: very perfumy and floral, as well an apricot citric sweetness. After that its all downhill: runny and thin on the palate, with an initial astringent plasticine bitterness becoming a lemon dishsoap mixed with tea disaster. The finish tastes like artichokes and rubber. There’s no way I can finish this.

22 oz bottle shared by shigadeyo. Pours a hazy golden orange color with the smallest of heads. The aroma is fruity citrus, earthy, grass, and funk. The flavor is initially fruity that rapidly diminishes to a floral soapy chemical mess. Not a fan of this one.

Bomber from Bottle Barn; Nose is grain, faint grassy hops, and an herbal odor I assume to be yerba mate; hazy yellow with a medium pale yellow head; flavor was peppery, lemon, wheat, and hop bitterness!

Very acidic aroma... not too appealing. The appearance doesn’t do much for me either... opaque orangy/amber color. Pours a ridiculously thick head that lasts and laces the glass heavily. Slight molasses flavor, hints of hops and herbs. Icky palate and rough, acidic finish. I’m hyper after this caffeinated junk!! Butte Creek tastes like Butte.

22 ounce bomber purchased at the Davis Food Co-op. Aroma is very herbal, acidic, with some lemons, and a bit acetic. Almost has a peppery solvent-like nose. Interesting aroma, to say the least. Moderately opaque honey-colored body with a massive, frothy white head. Wow...spicy, spritzy peppery, herbal start. Becomes a little dry and bitter later on. Finishes with...olives. Pimento Olives. This is a dead-ringer for those green Pimento Olives that you can buy in a jar. I don’t like drinking olive juice.

served cold from bottle. it poured a golden color, maybe a hint of orange in it, with a thin white head that left some lacing. the smell was very earthy with some hops. the taste was quite interesting and the mate is definitely noticeable. i don’t know if it’s the kind of beer i would drink regularly, though.

Cloudy banana bronze with mildewy head. Appealing aroma composed of a complexity of earthy herbalness and light PNW hopping. Some yeasty zest, perhaps a bit of lemon. Interesting mate flavor that is quite enjoyable with some zing and mildly tannic. I thoroughly enjoyed this brew and hope to imbibe again.
