Commercial Description:
An organic pale ale brewed with yerba maté, source of the ancient South American tea prized for its energizing and nutritional properties. Mateveza showcases the pairing of organic yerba maté and cascade hops. Yerba maté’s earthy, herbal notes are the perfect compliment to the crisp, citrusy character of the cascade hops. Mateveza is brewed and bottled by Butte Creek Brewing Company, a gold medal winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® that has been brewing organic since 1997.

Pours a haze filled golden orange. A light earthy aroma with a touch of cirus is about all I can smell in this one. The taste is mainly hops and some herb.

Bottle shared by shigadeyo. Poured hazy orange with a minimal white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Medium aroma of sweet citrus, herbs and spice. Light to medium body. Medium sweet spice flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderae duration. Average brew that is not my style.

I’m a yerba mate drinker so this was a surprising find. Yerba mate is an "acquired taste," and I never thought I’d see it married with beer. Appearance-wise, it had a bright orange opaqueness with a thinnish head. Malts were mild, slightly toasty and earthy. Hops were faint, providing only a tame bitterness. Yerba mate was surprisingly noticeable, and it seemed to blend well with the malts/hops. I noticed some other spicy notes, but I couldn’t tell if they were from the hops or just random esters. This beer has some real "tea-like" qualities, even though yerba mate is technically not tea (it’s an herb). The YM even seems to contribute a pinch of smokiness. Overall, I thought the beer was kind of nice ... even a bit refreshing. But I may be slightly biased.

Vegetative and green olive nose with a bit of very weird funk (in a bad way). Astringent and herbal palate. Mildly vegetative finish.

hefeweizen appearance - hazy, golden hue with frothy head. Grass scented earth hops with a mild, unassuming initial taste and cola-like after taste - perhaps the mate’s influence?

Bottled. An unclear amber golden beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of peaches, while the flavor is sweet with strong notes of elderberryflowers as well as other spices.

Cloudy deep golden colour with a white head. Light sweet spicy and herbal aroma. Bitter flavor with perfume notes.
