Commercial Description:
An organic pale ale brewed with yerba maté, source of the ancient South American tea prized for its energizing and nutritional properties. Mateveza showcases the pairing of organic yerba maté and cascade hops. Yerba maté’s earthy, herbal notes are the perfect compliment to the crisp, citrusy character of the cascade hops. Mateveza is brewed and bottled by Butte Creek Brewing Company, a gold medal winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® that has been brewing organic since 1997.

The aroma is spicy, herbal and floral. Some light citrus and rose hip notes. The body is a murky orange/yellow with soft brown highlights and a thick (two fingers) white head. Herbal bitterness. Bandaids. Grapefruit peels and green citrus leaves. It almost numbs the tongue, but it doesn’t taste very good at all.

Bomber poured a hazy gold with a small disapating amber head. Aromas of carmel, toasted malt and some spice notes. Palate was light bodied, crisp and slightly dry. Flavors of bread, light straw, some earthiness and spice with a crisp dry finish.

Courtesy boboski. The aroma is so unique, I am not sure if I am really nosing a beer. Very herbal, earthy, warming aroma. I feel as if I should be traversing the Amazon wearing a loin cloth and a pith hat. The flavor is not as bitter as I has anticipated, but is noticable. Very interesting.

Thanks to SoLan for this one. Poured a cloudy orange color with a thin white head. It smelled of plants, flowers, a very earthy aroma for sure. The taste was very unique as well with some citrus fruit, hops, spices, and all the earthy tastes. This had a lot fo stuff going on, but it wasn’t overly exciting. it was medium bodied with a spicy finish. It was definitely different and unique.

Translucent golden orange pour, thin white head that quickly and fully diminishes. Interesting tea-like appearance. The nose is very interesting, quite exciting. Toasted grains are potent even though Yerba maté is so very prevalent. The thing I enjoy most about the nose here is the fresh feeling of herbal intoxication, like the feeling I get inhaling fresh peppermint; it’s a soft exhuberance, an eye-opener/nasal passage stretcher every time. Grapefruit hoppiness pares multi-citric hints, just as a gardener trims his fruit plants, releasing fresh, vivid aromas of earth and flora. Alcohol is undetectable. Uniqueness takes one step closer towards becoming an integral component of the foundation of my happiness, after each inhalation. The flavor introduces lightly tannic-styled cedar notes and multiple peppery spices. Bitterness is mild, coated with a touch of resin. Sweetness is well-mitigated and pleasantly integrated, also decidedly integral. The flavor isn’t exciting but it’s a pleasant execution of a unique recipe. A touch of acidity lingers in a very earthy and lightly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is handsomely and vividly carbonated, light-medium to medium bodied, smooth and tingling with spice. Very enjoyable.

Pours a light copper color with a small white head. Smells of earthiness, plants, somewhat vegetal, not extremely pleasant at all. The taste was a little better, some citrus, spices, floral wierdness. Just an overall unusual beer, that has alot of things going on, but nothing extremely inviting. A little bit spicy in the inish, with some floral hops. Unique beer.

Earthy aroma, citrusy, very floral, interesting, something i just can’t place, great aroma though. Pours pale golden color. Very different flavor, floral, earthy, citrus hops, very vegetable like flavor. Very mild.

Terrible beer. Now to the specifics. Cloudy hefeweizen look to the beer with white head. It smelled herbal, organic, and lightly hopped. The taste is similar to the smell and is herbal, but very watery, with a lightly bitter finish. Bland, but mostly smooth, and what taste there was, was a sort of funky tea like taste. One of my least favorite beers for sure. If you’re not crazy about whatever the heck, "yerba mate’ " is, or you don’t need to try a SPICE/HERB/VEGETABLE style beer, there is no reason to drink this.
