Commercial Description:
An organic pale ale brewed with yerba maté, source of the ancient South American tea prized for its energizing and nutritional properties. Mateveza showcases the pairing of organic yerba maté and cascade hops. Yerba maté’s earthy, herbal notes are the perfect compliment to the crisp, citrusy character of the cascade hops. Mateveza is brewed and bottled by Butte Creek Brewing Company, a gold medal winner at the 2006 Great American Beer Festival® that has been brewing organic since 1997.

Sampled in a 22oz bottle from BevMo. Had a very nice pour, golden brown and hazy. Overall a very nice beer, with a smooth palate but limited on the flavor. Probably woudlnt purchase again.

Bomber sent home from The Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa. Beer is clear, medium caramel brown with a small, off-white, frothy, quickly and mostly diminishing head.
First impression is earthy herbal and bright hop dovetailing nicely. Malty with light notes of toasted grain, subdued biscuit. Perhaps lightly raw/worty; Hoppy with moderate lemon zest, evergreen-leaning herb; Yeasty with a trace note of sweat.
The flavor is lightly acidic, lightly sweet, light/moderately bitter with a long, lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter finish.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is fizzy.
Working, but not captivating.

Bottle (mini caffeine beer tasting). Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy dark yellow, unfiltered. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (apricot, grapefruit), with notes of wood/bark, medicinal herbs. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Interesting and somewhat unusual. Not bad.

22 oz bottle: consumed on July 9th 2007. Poured as a pure golden with fizzy foam of topping. Aroma was light with noticeable malt and some light notes of herbs. The flavor was strong with a green leaf and fizzy carbonated ginseng type taste. Interesting beer.

11-Apr-07 (22 oz bottle: Purchased 09-Apr-07 for $4.50 at Liquid Solutions in Tigard, OR) The grainy malt aroma hints of corn, but the herbal fragrance is the most apparent here, with lightly citrusy hops and a dash of tea in the background. Tasting the beer, again, the malt is fairly grainy in nature, but is content in its unglamorous role of providing a simple base that is ideal for showcasing the yerba maté. Hops are also quite light, so what stands out is the herbal, tea-like character of this beer. Medium-bodied and moderately carbonated, the beer also leaves a slightly oily residue on the palate. Pale golden in color and perfectly clear in appearance. Small, off-white head dissipates almost as rapidly as soda, leaving but a thin ring and a few "powdered sugar" sprinklings. No lacing, obviously. An okay beer, but buying this once for the novelty is sufficient because the beer isn’t interesting enough to buy again.

650 mL bottle. Hazy orange amber with a small fluffy white head. Citrus aroma with something kinda earhty and pungent, which I presume is the yerba mate. Citrus taste with a crisp earthy finish. It’s certainly unusual.
