Lunkie (1020), Glen Iris, Australia Jan 6, 2008 Stale ash tray aroma. Murky yellow brown colour with poor head and lacing. Smokey stale malt flavour very unplesant. Flat palate. Linc (736), Sydney, Australia May 29, 2007 I just don’t get this beer; coffee in a pale ale... why? I’d much rather use the complementary tones of darker malts to showcase some coffee flavour. A weak coffee aroma with a touch of banana. Flavour mainly of coffee and some wheat grain character. Thin palate doesn’t carry the coffee well, yet some lingers longer than it should. Coffee porters may not be original, but the style works a lot better than this. Rizzo (11), Australia May 1, 2007 Tried this in the middle of a long session - needed the caffeine hit. Surprised at the light colour. Coffe aroma and flavour apparent. Best example of coffee and beer I’ve tried, but not a must try. Dredd (404), Ormond, Australia Feb 16, 2007 Aroma is a bit lacking with a touch of coffee and smells sort of like a Macro/Corn syrup based beer. Flavour is a bit wierd, it is a sourness with coffee floating in and out and slight nuttiness. Finish is has some coffee in it too, but again it seems to swing in and out rather then consistent and progressive. A nice experiment, but doesn’t quite pull off. Stew41 (906), Caulfield, Australia Jan 17, 2007 A bit disappointing really as to my mind this beer doesn’t really achieve anything despite the coffee bean aspect. Pours like a macro albeit the dull orange haze gives the impression it wasn’t heavily ’cleaned up’ prior to bottling. There’s no doubting the bouquet; coffee chocolate notes dominate. Palate is definately ho-hum as the coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa etc, overlayed with a citrus note, looks quite awkward and unbalanced. As a few other notes have observed coffee flavours work well with stout or porter styles yet Malilda Bay has tried to infuse into a pale lager / pilsner format. It just doesn’t work at all.
