On tap at the Australian Heritage Hotel (as beer of the month). Arrived dark brown (almost black) with a small, dense, frothy, light-brown head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was of toasted malts with caramel, prunes, plums, dusty chocolate, light notes of sarsaparilla and hints of marmite/yeast. Flavor was of roasted malts with a light bitterness, smooth chocolate, coffee, dried fruits (dates, raisins) and some light yeasty notes. Medium bodied with medium carbonation, a dry/creamy mouthfeel and a good finish. Quite drinkable.

Cola brown body, tan foam.
Muted aroma...from chilled serving...but apparent subtle roasted maltiness and definately some detectable phenolics.
Good mouthfeel, creamy, high carbonation, bit of acid and roasted astrigency white is a bit confusing for the style.
Roasted malt flavours seem to take charge on the body; dark chocolate, light roast coffee, bit of smoke and toffee, with a good measure of banana, pepper and clove to add complexity. Finish is quite bitter, and leaves me wondering Is this really suppose to be a dunkelweizen?.
All random musings aside, this seemed like a good beer from the small tasting I was given. I mentioned to the bloke that served me that I haven’t seen many/any Aussie examples of this beer. I’m definately going to have to get my hands on a larger sample, do some more ’thorough’ sampling, and get rid of the idea that I was drinking Dogbolter fermented with a weizen yeast!

Oct 13, 2008 This was an enjoyable beer, but it didnt really "do it" for me like I had hoped it would. Some really nice flavours of cocoa and fruit coming through - however I am not quite sure that it meets up to the standards of a great dunkel weizen, something which I believe no Australian brewery has yet done well. All in all though this is very decent beer.

Oct 6, 2008 Tried on tap at the Queens. Deep dark body with ruby red tinges and a decent light tan head. Definite caramel in the aroma though not as prominent in the taste, light banana, vanilla and hints of smoke also in the taste although none of them too upfront but well integrated. Medium to full bodied with a long finish. Will see how it rates when it comes out in the bottle.

Sep 27, 2008 On Tap - Great beer, in general I am not a huge Dunkelweizen fan, but this is really good. Beer presents cola-brown with a nice white head. Aroma is clove and banana which transfers through to the initial flavour on the palate. This transfers through to a sweet finish which is a tad short and there is some slight bitterness/acridity. But is an excellent beer worth getting while it is available.
