Commercial Description:
Stickler's Best Bitter is meticulously hand crafted for English Ale enthusiasts. It is a traditional Bitter brewed to an old world recipe using Maris Otter malt and a hint of crystal malt, balanced by East Kent Goldings and Fuggles Hops, all of which are imported from England. The use of traditional English Ale yeasts enhances Stickler's tantalising floral aroma, which is subtly reminiscent of dried fruits.

Cask at the Pig n whistle. Slightly warm and flat, just like it is supposed to be. Not quite as sweet as a lot of bitters and just a little bit of toastiness. A bit of that "grassy but fine" hop character from the Fuggles. Medium body and low carbonation means you can put them down pretty easily, then annoy the bartender by making them pump you another one out of the cask.

Transport can be a bit of a toss sometimes and so I can appreciate why some would like to steer clear of it. For a beer before the game at the ’G’ however this is not a bad joint at all. Being a Saturday it isn’t suit city and before a game there is a serious tilt at getting a bit lubricated on a good beer before facing the cups of Caaaarlton mid strengths at the ground. This takes a while to pour but it serves to set an expectation and give the whole process a touch of authenticity. The golden hue and barely present head from a nitrogenation is fine, the nose is soft and fruity with pleasant hop aroma provided by the noble British hops. Not a lively drink as expected but an absolute beauty of a quaffer. Pre game you can down 2 or 3 pints and be very satisfied. On the day I had it the stars must have been aligned as I found this to be as pleasing and flavoursome as some of the good ales in the Old Dart.

Quite an easy drinking Bitter Ale, served on tap at Bells via a hand pumped cask so the temperature and carbonation were spot on. Plenty of caramel in the malt balanced with the bitterness made it quite pleasent. Palate was borderline tin, but was consistent for the style so no reduction in the ratings.

31 May 2006 - Light sweet fruit and floral hop aroma. Amber brown colour, reasonable head and ordinary lacing. Light grapefruit hop flavour. Bitter hop finish and floral aftertaste. I am not crazy about the hop finish.
