mmm///beer (521), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 20, 2008 12 oz. can in trade Snojerk321-thanks!!! Served in pint glass- poured non transparent black when held to a light source, low clumpy carbonation, bubbly off tan head went away a little too quick with little lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, with notes of molasses and roasted coconuts in the background. Hits the mouth with a wide body, malt was toasted until black but not burned just from feel, a hint of sweetness in the middle with cream underneath, finish punches you in the knee if you think you don’t want to have another snort. Note to self- don’t visit Hawaii- will stay at the bar the entire time drinking this. BrotherGrendel (47), San Diego, California, USA Aug 17, 2008 Dense brown hue, thick layer of tan shaving cream-like head, minimal lacing. Smell is coffee and dark chocolate malts, roast and bready malts, light hint of earthy hops and booze. Taste is mostly roasted malts with a good dose of dark chocolate and coffee, earthy hops, a hint of actual coconut lingers on the edges of the palate especially during the bitter finish. Palate is thin-bodied, watery smooth texture, carbonation is pretty high and prickly here. Overall, a unique porter with tones of coconut that accentuate the malt profile without being too overwhelming, very exciting but I wouldn’t drink a whole lot of this at a time, strangely the alcohol seems stronger than it should be at 5.5%. GAManiac (265), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 12, 2008 Pours pitch black with only a hint of mahogany around the edges when held up to the light. The two-finger off-white head dissipates fairly quickly and leaves decent lacing.
Big sweet toasted coconut aroma with roasted coffee in the background. There is also a big sweet malt background.
Taste is huge on the toasted cocunuts - so sweet and so tasty. There is also a bit of coffee and dark chocolate on a sweet malt base.
Mouthfeel is silky smooth with strong carbonation that tickles the tongue.
This porter is absurdly drinkable. I wouldn’t trust myself if I had a lot of this in the fridge. Sweet, but not overpoweringly so, this is a fantastic porter. robertjm (235), El Cerrito, California, USA Aug 11, 2008 Something new at Bevmo Oakland! A little on the expensive side $9/4pk, but it was in a can and intrigued me. Pours a nice tan head, but it falls fairly quickly, leaving a thin layer on top of the beer. Perhaps the oils from the coconut are causing it to collapse? Aroma is that of a porter. No special coconut in the aroma. Dark brown body which doesn’t let light pass through. Flavor is where the toasted coconut resides! Very first part of the flavor profile was the coconut, which then seques to sweet malts, including chocolate malt. Really interesting. Very pleasant beer. Would be really interested in trying it on draft. Hope they start canning/bottling their other beers too. Shag (1767), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA Aug 10, 2008 This poured a black color with a moderate tan head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, and coconuts. The flavor could best be described as a Mounds candy bar in liquid form. I tasted coconuts, chocolate, with some coffee notes as well. The finish was rather sweet. Overall a nice beer.
