durhambeer (394), Durham, North Carolina, USA Jul 1, 2008 Thanks, Dave, for the sweet can as an extra. Dark brown pour with small but steady dark tan head. From the pour, it’s clear this is a thinner porter, but that’s not really a bad thing. This is a highly sessional beer, one I’d even venture to say I’d drink on a warm summer day. Wouldn’t say that about most porters. Found the coconut to be remarkably subtle. There in a roasty way on the nose along with some vanilla and dark chocolate. A little coffee. Similar palate, with a little more hops and fruit coming out. Really surprised how much I like this. Big ups for originality.
glkaiser (907), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 26, 2008 Black with big brown head. Aroma of sweet chocolate and almond joys. For the most part, I absolutely love the flavors in this. More almond joy with toasted coconut, a bit of chocolate and good roast. Big fan of this style, and this is a great effort. The finish has just enough metallic bitterness to bring this down a notch, though. Maybe turn the carb down a bit as well ABUSEDGOAT (1898), California, USA Aug 22, 2008 Darker colored. Aroma is rich coffee and roast, some chocolate and caramel. Hints of coconut? Sure why not. Medium bodied, a nice porter. mmm///beer (526), Austin, Texas, USA Aug 20, 2008 12 oz. can in trade Snojerk321-thanks!!! Served in pint glass- poured non transparent black when held to a light source, low clumpy carbonation, bubbly off tan head went away a little too quick with little lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, with notes of molasses and roasted coconuts in the background. Hits the mouth with a wide body, malt was toasted until black but not burned just from feel, a hint of sweetness in the middle with cream underneath, finish punches you in the knee if you think you don’t want to have another snort. Note to self- don’t visit Hawaii- will stay at the bar the entire time drinking this. BrotherGrendel (132), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 17, 2008 Dense brown hue, thick layer of tan shaving cream-like head, minimal lacing. Smell is coffee and dark chocolate malts, roast and bready malts, light hint of earthy hops and booze. Taste is mostly roasted malts with a good dose of dark chocolate and coffee, earthy hops, a hint of actual coconut lingers on the edges of the palate especially during the bitter finish. Palate is thin-bodied, watery smooth texture, carbonation is pretty high and prickly here. Overall, a unique porter with tones of coconut that accentuate the malt profile without being too overwhelming, very exciting but I wouldn’t drink a whole lot of this at a time, strangely the alcohol seems stronger than it should be at 5.5%. GAManiac (280), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Aug 12, 2008 Pours pitch black with only a hint of mahogany around the edges when held up to the light. The two-finger off-white head dissipates fairly quickly and leaves decent lacing.
Big sweet toasted coconut aroma with roasted coffee in the background. There is also a big sweet malt background.
Taste is huge on the toasted cocunuts - so sweet and so tasty. There is also a bit of coffee and dark chocolate on a sweet malt base.
Mouthfeel is silky smooth with strong carbonation that tickles the tongue.
This porter is absurdly drinkable. I wouldn’t trust myself if I had a lot of this in the fridge. Sweet, but not overpoweringly so, this is a fantastic porter.
