wimpie133 (130), Brugge, Belgium Nov 9, 2009 From tap, also after visit of the brewery of Achouffe. Dark brown beer with a reddish shine and a medium white head that also disappears towards the end. Roasted malty smell, light sweet. Taste is also malty, light sweet, soft mouthfeel, nce and enjoyable to drink, muut tasting a lot weaker than the blonde ’La Chouffe’. Lacking also in complexity to be as good as previous nounced beer. Wolfbass (48), Firenze, Italy Nov 5, 2009 Color mahogany with reflexes red and beautiful head. Aroma of malt and fruit. In mouth it likes for the round body that hides well the good alcoholic gradation. daleharshman (181), San Diego, California, USA Oct 30, 2009 750 mL bottle from Total Wine in Tustin ($8.99). Pours a murky dark chestnut with a couple finger of beige head that does not last for long. Aroma is dark fruit, toffee, and yeast. Despite the style labeling, there’s no mistaking this as Belgian in origin -- it smells a lot like a quad or dubbel. Flavor of raisins, lightly smoked malt, caramel, spice, and brown sugar. It’s sweet like a good Scotch ale, but lacking somewhat in overall complexity. Light in body with a tangy finish. TizzleJizzle (46), Garland, Texas, USA Oct 27, 2009 Nutty malty aroma and poured a dark opaque brown color. Gorgeous appearance with tons of unfiltered particles floating around and excellent lacing. Tasted notes of spices, caramel, yeast, and bread with a strong finish of alcohol. Overall this is one of the best scotch ales I have ever enjoyed. Scoop it up, it’s worth the money! jimmay (179), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Oct 24, 2009 Champagne bottle. Pours deep copper in colour with not much head. Aroma is sweet. Taste is strong, slightly sweet, with some spicy hop finish. planky84 (99), , Greater London, England Oct 16, 2009 Bottle from Mr Lawrence Wine Merchant, Brockley. Pours a dark brown with a beige head. Aromas of roasted malts, nuts, light brown sugar, dark fruits. Oily texture. Flavours of bitter chocolate, raisins, brown sugar. Good alchohol burn. Long, long finish of fruit and malts. Nice.
patrickfannon (273), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 13, 2009 Bottle. 25.4 oz. Split with James and Sean. Pours deep hazy brown, with a beige, frothy head. Aroma of walnuts, malt, barley, wheat, and hints of chocolate. Medium body with a creamy, full finish. Excellent scotch ale. Cole (266), , Alberta, Canada Oct 12, 2009 Pours deep brown with a beige head. No retention. Aroma is malty with notes of fruit and a strong alcohol smell. The flavour is very scittish. It has that very deep malty bready charcteristic that I have come to expect from scottish beer. Very creamy, notes of plum, the finish is also a bit too alcoholic. But despite all of the scottish characteristics there is definatley that very distinct beligian yeast smell and flavour. Prett cool beer.
