thenick (742), North Bellmore, New York, USA Jul 17, 2007 Pours a deep brown with a frothy white head. Aroma is predominantly brown sugar with slightly-detectable fruits and spices as well. The taste is malt up front with some prune, malt, yeast, and possibly rye notes toward the end. A great offering from Brasserie d’Achouffe. jarspag (593), Los Angeles, California, USA Jul 12, 2007 Sampled in Italy at a local hole in the wall beer bar. Served way too cold - had to wait on it to warm. Huge frothy head - pretty heavily carbonated. Very easily drinkable but not teeming with flavor or anything to write home about. jlf278 (252), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Jul 10, 2007 Pours with beautiful, plentiful head, perfect density, sticks around, nice contrast to murky brown body. Aroma is great with lots of brown sugar and some black pepper. Feels pretty thin and watery, but a bit smooth in mouth, goes down quickly!
Tastes of plum, malt, and yeast with a bit of brandy too. Carbonation is good, a little more than most beers, but works well. Spice is nice and expected, but just a shade off from what would really complement the rest of the flavors.
Overall, a great, suprisingly easy brew to guzzle down. Just not leaving me with too much reason to go out and buy another. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jul 9, 2007 750ml bottle-thanks to Joe/jwc215 pours a diminishing tan head and brown color with amber tint. Aroma is sweet medium malt-caramel, bready, medium/dark fruit. Taste is first dry hops character, then sweet medium malt-caramel, bready, medium/dark fruit. Occasional. OK effervescence. Hazmatt (363), Virginia, USA Jul 8, 2007 Bottle. Dark brown, burgundy color with a billowy head. A spicy aroma of chocolate malt, some roasted coffee notes. Flavor is similar with hints of molasses and mild spiciness. Fairly smooth drinking ale. Alcohol well disguised. Very good. krysztofar (344), belleville, Illinois, USA Jul 4, 2007 A somewhat rocky maybe more frothy light tan head shrinks quickly on top of this murky red brown ale. Afruity belgian aroma rises from the glass. a little banana and a clove or mulled spice scent. interesting subdued and somewhat earthy approach with a full round presence. hops are assertive and tingly throughout the finish and the high alcohol is well contained. alexanderj (2213), Chino Hills, California, USA Jun 24, 2007 Bottle; poured a dark brown with a creamy off white head. Aroma of caramel malt, yeast and spice. Caramel malt, then peat/roasted malt and hops on the finish. Hints of sweetness; occational alcohol warming, but alcohol well hidden. Palate was a little harsh at times and a little watery; didnt detract from the beer too much though. Not a favorite from a style that I normally like. badlizard (2325), Berkeley, California, USA Jun 22, 2007 750 mL bottle. Golden brown with big fluffy off-white head. Malty aroma with a hint of yeast. Lively palate. Caramel taste with a toasty, yeasty finish.
