mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Dec 7, 2006 Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours a deep ruby color. Moderate slightly dirty looking head. Aroma is slightly sweet with some dark fruits, yeast and dirt. Slighty sweet vinous/sugar flavors up front. Somewhat spicy with alcohol in the finish. More like a Dubbel or a dark BSA. Fairly rich. Cliff (355), Avon Lake, Ohio, USA Nov 30, 2006 Poured a dark hazy brown with a thick head. Nice aromas of yeast and spice. Aromas carry into the flavor, good maltiness, but nowhere near a scotch ale, still very, very Belgian due to the yeast. Good bubbly mouthfeel. I enjoyed this one. Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Nov 29, 2006 Way too much yeast. Zero head.BIG yeasty malty aroma. Tingly palate. Little peppery flavor. Sort of bland > needs flavor. Little alcohol flavor detected as it warms up. OK but probably won’t drink ever again > lacks character. jblendy (518), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Nov 26, 2006 Pours cloudy, dark, amber hued/brown with a nice creamy/frothy tan head. Lightly sweet brown sugar-like, and mildly spicy yeast aromas. Flavors are similar to the aroma, with some slight nuttiness, and a little hint of smoke. Palate is lightly effervescent, flavors retain well, with a lightly creamy feel. Well balanced and enjoyable. Nicko (186), Ashfield, Australia Nov 21, 2006 Consumed with exzematic and blue cheese, a good combination. Full bodied, very sweet and smokey. RagallachMC (631), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Nov 19, 2006 11.2oz bottle. Aroma: Sweet malt with a brown sugar note. Juniper and allspice, yeast, dark fruits, toasted nuts, and a thick breadiness. Appearance: Dark reddish-brown. Light beige head was full and creamy with decent retention. Nice lacing. Flavor: Sweet malt, again with a brown sugar quality. Jammy dark fruits, toasted nuts, bread. Sweetness doesn’t linger into the finish. Palate: Medium-full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Some alcohol warming in back of mouth. Overall: I liked this beer, but was also somewhat disappointed by it. Didn’t have the rich melanoidin caramel flavor that I look for in the style. Still, worth a try. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Nov 14, 2006 what is this stuff, not a scottich, not a brown ale, not even an "abbey" ...its like a strange mix of them all, a big disappoint with this, after having la chouffe in amsterdam, this is a bastard, a good beer yes, but not near great. some wine like qualities, in taste and smell...has a nice puddle of head, in the chimay glass it had a nice boob puddle. If I hadn’t paid $12 for the bottle i would be alittle nicer to this beer, MAYBE on tap ONE day but, if u can find it on discount do it! JoshuaB (422), Detroit, Michigan, USA Nov 9, 2006 Tap. Brown, somewhat cloudy. Aroma is suble and dry. Has some nice basement action going on, along with some grass. Flavor is malty and delicious, with some spices and dark fruits present. Yum yum.
